Operating System & Site Role Support • KB Article 974236 : entitled “Update rollup for System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 to add support for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 clients”. • This rollup adds basic support for client management capabilities for recognizing and being able to target Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 systems • This support is limited to client only. Service Pack 2 is required for the following areas: • Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 OS Deployment • Admin Console access from a Windows 7 client or Windows Server 2008 R2 • Windows Server 2008 R2 hosting site server roles • Branch Cache • Direct Access • App-V 4.6 (x64) support

Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 policy changes • Before SP2 : • Policies were retrieved from the Management Point and were not effective until after 2 minutes • With SP2 : • Policies are now being applied straight away • Benefits : • OSD Task Sequences will run faster as they do not need to wait anymore after a reboot. • User or group targeted deployments at logon will run instantly. This is a huge improvement for App-V applications

User state Migration Tool v4 • USMT 4.0 new features • Document finder • Volume shadow copy support • Applies to all online scenarios • Utilize the volume shadow copy service • If the service is available • Used when a file is locked • Benefits: • Eliminates most file access issues • Reduces the need for applications to be closed

Using USMTv4 with ConfigMgr SP2 task sequences • ConfigMgr 2007 SP2 Support • USMTv4 provides hardlink support for Win7 • ConfigMgr 2007 SP2 built-in user interface doesn’t currently support hardlinks ! • Use command-line task sequence variables and scanstate.exe to support hardlinks in task sequence !

Branch Cache Support • Prerequisites : • Requires Win7 client and W2K8 R2 backend ( Distribution Point) • Out of band BITS release patch will bring P2P Win7 support to Vista, Server 2k8 (No XP support) • The goals of Branch Cache integration with Configuration Manager are threefold: • Enable Configuration Manager administrators to significantly reduce WAN utilization in a branch office scenario • Enable Configuration Manager administrators to reduce the number of actively managed Distribution Points. • Enable Configuration Manager users to transfer content faster and with less restrictions in the remote office scenario.

  29. App-V • App-V 4.5 SP1 : • Required for Windows 7 support • Part of MDOP 2009 R2 • Will be available around same date as ConfigMgr SP2 • App-V 4.6 Beta: • First vendor to virtualise x64 applications • Windows 7 support • Will be available around H1 2010

Deployment Tips • Before upgrading to SP2 : • Backup your database and SCCM (central) primary site server. • Upgrade your WSUS server to WSUS SP2 as well ! • During the upgrade to SP2 : • Your Db will be upgraded • The Windows® Automated Installation Kit (AIK) for Windows® 7 is being installed • ConfigMgr Custom Boot Images are not upgraded. • After the upgrade to SP2 : • Check your log files for successful reinstallation of your different roles • Align the rest of your pc-park slowly with the new client
