2010 Hurricane TrackingBob Harris GIS Final Project
Procedure • Download data of all 21 Atlantic storms from http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/gis/ • Import all data into ArcMap • Data includes positions, tracks, radii, and windswaths • Also import country borderlines
Procedure • Use Tracking Analyst on position data • Set Data Source from downloaded data for each storm • Set field to DTG • Set organization to STORMNUM
Procedure • Make sure the time fields are in the correct format: yyyyMMddHH
Procedure • Use Tracking Analyst Animation Tool to export movie • Set data range to 6/1/10 and 12/1/10, each at midnight, to get entire hurricane season
Procedure • Select by Attributes for each storm • For Hurricanes: “INTENSITY” > 64 • For Tropical Storms: “INTENSITY” > 34 AND “INTENSITY” < 64 • For Tropical Depressions: “INTENSITY” < 34 • Intensity measured in knots!
Procedure • Create layer from selected feature for each one, for each storm. • Select different symbols for each: • Hurricane • Tropical Storm • Tropical Depression
