  1. Moldova How their culture affects them

  2. Government • Their government is democratic with presidential and unicameral legislature. • On August 27, 1991, the Republic of Moldova declared its independence from the Soviet Union and became a sovereign state. • On August 27, 1991 (now Independence Day), it declared Moldova's complete independence.

  3. Social Organization • Girls are expected to help their mothers in an early age and also take care of smaller siblings. • A good child is expected to be God-fearing and shy and does not participate in adult conversations without being asked to do so. • As a result of economic difficulties, people sometimes complete higher education in their late thirties, after establishing a family.

  4. Language • The Moldovan dialect of Romanian is spoken by the majority of the people of Bessarabia. • Stalin justified the creation of the Moldavian SSR by claiming that a distinct "Moldavian" language was an indicator that "Moldavians" were a separate nationality from the Romanians in Romania.

  5. Religion • Most of Moldova's populations are Orthodox Christians. • Before Soviet power was established in Moldova, the vast majority of ethnic Romanians belonged to the Romanian Orthodox Church (Bucharest Patriarchate), but today the Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) has jurisdiction in Moldova.

  6. Economic Systems • Under Soviet rule, the Moldavian ASSR (1924-40) experienced considerable industrial development between the two world wars, particularly in and around Tiraspol. • After World War II, substantial industrialization occurred throughout the Moldavian SSR (1940- 91), especially in Chisinau, but with a continuing focus on Transnistria as well.

  7. Customs & Trations • The territory of modern Moldova was once inhabited by geto-daci tribes, whose predominant occupations where agriculture and goat herding. • When the territory of Moldova became a part of the Roman Empire around 117 A.D., many of its existing traditions and customs changed and adopted the traits of Roman culture. • the language changed radically under the influence of Latin.

  8. Arts & Literature • The first Moldovan books were religious texts that appeared in the mid-17th century. • Many Romanian intellectuals were either executed or deported.

  9. History • Moldova is two different regions that have been joined into one country, but not into one nation. • To a great extent, Moldova's history has been shaped by the foreigners who came to stay and by those who merely passed through.
