KIRKBY IN ASHFIELD FACTFILE

  • Population from the 2001 census was 25,265. In 1861 it was 2,826, so the town has grown a lot, mainly due to the former mining history.
  • Kirkby lies on the Eastern edge of the Derwent Valley which separates Nottinghamshire from Derbyshire.
  • Kirkby in Ashfield was originally a Danish settlement. Kirkby means church town and Ashfield gets its name from the open fields with Ash trees.
  • Kirkby was once a popular coal mining district. Summit Colliery in East Kirkby closed in 1969.
  • Kirkby in Ashfield is mentioned in the Domesday book.
  • Kirkby was granted a market and fair in 1261, and Kirkby Cross was given to mark this. The remains of the Cross, which is made of stone, still stand in the old part of the town today.
  • Kirkby had a famous cricketer called Harold Larwood. He was the fastest bowler in the world in his heyday. His statue stands in the town centre.
  • Kirkby once had a Tudor Manor house near Parkway train station.
slide22

A famous Cardinal called Cardinal Wolsey stayed there in the 1500s.

  • Kirkby has a war memorial to remember the people who gave their lives for their country. This is located at Kingsway in Kirkby close to our school.
  • Kirkby has two main churches, St. Wilfred's and St. Thomas. These are both Protestant churches.
  • Kirkby once had a castle which stood behind St. Wilfred's church. There were 15 knights to the Realm too so the town was once an important place!
  • Kirkby has two mainline train stations running from Nottingham to Worksop. The line is called the Robin Hood Line named after the local legend.
