  2. Getting to know the students in India. Hello there, We are students from the Local History group at Kirkby College, and we would like to get to know some of you by finding out a bit about you. Our ages range from 11 to 16. We’ve put together some questions for you and it would be great if you could ask us some too! We have also answered the questions we have wrote for you on the next page, it would be interesting to see if we have similar answers to some of the questions. We look forward to getting to know you. Jack, Adam, Troy, Chloe, Anna, Constantine, Victoria, Brendan, Ellie and Karl, Cerys and Brendan.

  3. OUR QUESTIONS Do you enjoy school? What time do you start and finish school? What is your favourite subject? What are your teachers like? How do you travel to school, is it far from your home? How many weeks holiday do you get in the summer? Do you have to wear a uniform, what is it like? What do you do in your spare time? Do you like history? What job do you want to do when you leave school? Do you get to go on many school trips? What local history do you have where you live? Will you go to college or university after school? What is your favourite food? Do you like football, what team do you support if you do? What do you think England is like? Is it hot where you live? Have you heard of Robin Hood? He’s famous round here! Do you play any sports? What are you going to do when you get home from school? .

  4. OUR ANSWERS Do you enjoy school? Ellie, Adam, Jack, Chloe, Karl, Brendan, Lucy, Cerys, Victoria – yes, Troy – no. What time do you finish school? All – 3.10 pm. What is your favourite subject? Cerys, Karl, Jack, Adam, Troy, Ellie – history, Victoria – performing Arts, Lucy – drama, Brendan – art. What are your teachers like? Ellie – wonderful, Adam, Jack , Lucy, Cerys– good, Chloe – very nice, Karl – friendly, Brendan – kind, Victoria – not bad, Troy – annoying. How do you travel to school? Cerys – varies, Victoria, Lucy, Brendan, Jack, Troy – walk, Karl, Adam, Chloe – car. How many weeks holiday do you get in the summer? All – 6 weeks. Do you have to wear a uniform? What is it like? All – yes, navy blue sweatshirt, white polo shirt, black trousers or skirt and black shoes.

  5. What do you do in your spare time? Ellie – hang out with friends, Adam – X Box and golf and badminton, Jack – X Box and Warhammer (historical games), Chloe – go out with friends, Karl – badminton and golf, Brendan – Lego and Nintendo DS.S, Lucy – go on Facebook, Victoria – reading and writing, Cerys – do my homework, Troy – go out with my mates. Do you like history? Adam, Victoria, Lucy, Brendan, Karl, Chloe, Jack, Troy – yes, Cerys – yes and no, Ellie – I love history. What job do you want to do when you leave school? Jack– business man, Chloe, Lucy – hairdresser, Karl, Victoria – archaeologist, Brendan – inventor, Cerys – chef, Ellie – photographer, Adam – pro golfer, Troy – armed forces. Do you get to go on many school trips? All – not that many but one is being planned soon. What local history do you have where you live? All – Robin Hood, Tudor manor house remains, Nottingham castle, old workhouse, prehistoric caves, ex coalmine sites. Will you go to university or college when you leave school? Lucy, Chloe – college, Victoria, Ellie, Adam, Brendan, Karl, Cerys, Jack – both, Troy – none.

  6. What is your favourite food? Jack – fish and chips, Chloe – curry, Karl – mixture, Brendan – nearly all food, Adam – chocolate, Ellie – pasta, Cerys – pork chops, Victoria – fried chicken, Lucy – cheese, Troy – Italian food. Do you like football? Which team do you support? Jack – Liverpool, Lucy, Cerys, Brendan, - no, Victoria – only England, Adam – Liverpool, Brendan – no, I like cricket, Karl – Manchester United, Chloe – Notts County, Troy – West Ham. What do you think England is like? All – good to live here but we could do with better summers! Beautiful countryside and coast and lots of history! Is it hot where you live? All – We get some sunny days, but also rain. Last winter we had a lot of snow and got sent home from school. So far this winter we haven’t had any! Have you heard of Robin Hood? All – yes of course we have! Do you play any sports? All – some – football, cricket, badminton and P.E lessons! How old are you? Our ages range from 11 to 15.

  20. KIRKBY IN ASHFIELD FACTFILE • Population from the 2001 census was 25,265. In 1861 it was 2,826, so the town has grown a lot, mainly due to the former mining history. • Kirkby lies on the Eastern edge of the Derwent Valley which separates Nottinghamshire from Derbyshire. • Kirkby in Ashfield was originally a Danish settlement. Kirkby means church town and Ashfield gets its name from the open fields with Ash trees. • Kirkby was once a popular coal mining district. Summit Colliery in East Kirkby closed in 1969. • Kirkby in Ashfield is mentioned in the Domesday book. • Kirkby was granted a market and fair in 1261, and Kirkby Cross was given to mark this. The remains of the Cross, which is made of stone, still stand in the old part of the town today. • Kirkby had a famous cricketer called Harold Larwood. He was the fastest bowler in the world in his heyday. His statue stands in the town centre. • Kirkby once had a Tudor Manor house near Parkway train station.

  21. A famous Cardinal called Cardinal Wolsey stayed there in the 1500s. • Kirkby has a war memorial to remember the people who gave their lives for their country. This is located at Kingsway in Kirkby close to our school. • Kirkby has two main churches, St. Wilfred's and St. Thomas. These are both Protestant churches. • Kirkby once had a castle which stood behind St. Wilfred's church. There were 15 knights to the Realm too so the town was once an important place! • Kirkby has two mainline train stations running from Nottingham to Worksop.
