  1. Pre-AP Curriculum Standard Clarification Documents

  2. Forethought Implications • Since PreAP courses share the same scope and sequence as on-level, there will no longer be separate PreAP courses in Forethought. • In addition to the on-level Standard Clarification (SC) documents, there will be PreAP SC documents for every standard. • PreAP teachers will select the PreAP SC when studying the curriculum and designing lessons.

  3. PreAP Standard Clarification Documents • The PreAP SC documents will: • Clarify how PreAP is different from on-level • When necessary, add to the cognitive rigor section to show how to deepen the learning beyond the grade-level TEKS • Provide additional content and context to correlate the TEKS to AP standards, where appropriate • Provide a sample assessment item aligned to correlating AP standards, where appropriate • Describe the habits of mind, or processes, that will be built through the standard

  4. The Process • Visit the course in the Scope and Sequence tab in Forethought • Start with the first standard in the first unit • Double-click the Standard Clarification document in the Resources box at the bottom right of the screen (the document will open up in a new window) • Copy and paste the standard to a Word document (highlight it from the blue-grey box and use Ctrl+C) • Highlight the entire table and hit Ctrl+C • Switch to a Word document and hit Ctrl+V • Save according to this scheme: PAPCourseStandard ex: PAPScience6.8a

  5. The Process: Forethought to Word 3. Highlight and Ctrl+C to copy the standard over to a Word document 1. Scope and Sequence Tab Click on a standard Highlight the entire table, Ctrl+C to copy. Switch to Word, Ctrl+V to paste. 2. The Standard Clarification should appear in the middle of the screen. If not, click “Standard Clarification” in the Related Resources box.

  6. Standard Clarification in Word • Now the on-level standard and standard clarification should be pasted into a Word document • SAVE this file according to the naming scheme: PAPCourseStandard-UnitName ex: PAPScience6.8a-UnitName Make sure all documents you create are saved/moved into the course folder within this PreAP AP Vertical Team network folder: \\mis-itspc\instruction\PreAP-AP-Vertical-Teams

  7. On-Level to PreAP: Standard Clarification • In the resources for each standard, there will now be a PreAP Standard Clarification (SC) document. • Your job: transform the on-level SC to a PreAP SC • Today you will save it as a Word document. It will be loaded into Forethought by C&I.

  8. On-Level to PreAP: Standard Clarification write a multi-paragraph essay to convey information about a topic that accurately synthesizes ideas from several sources.[17Aiv] On-Level SC Cognitive Rigor: What should students be doing? synthesize: to form (a material or abstract entity) by combining parts or elements Added “argue” because in AP, students do not merely synthesize for the sake of synthesizing. They make an argument and synthesize sources as support. The TEKS call for synthesizing in the expository form, but in PreAP we can begin asking the students to take it a step further and compose the more specific expository form: the argument. Pre-AP SC Cognitive Rigor: What should students be doing? synthesize: to form (a material or abstract entity) by combining parts or elements argue: presenting one’s assertion, proposition, or opinion and supporting it with reasoning

  9. On-Level to PreAP: Standard Clarification write a multi-paragraph essay to convey information about a topic that accurately synthesizes ideas from several sources.[17Aiv] Content: Brainstorming about a topic before gathering information allows students to use their own background knowledge to build on as they research the topic. After brainstorming, students generate questions about the topic and revise their questions as they gather information from multiple sources. Students will create an appropriately organized multi-paragraph essay to explain a topic which accurately synthesizes ideas from several sources . To make this align to the increased rigor (argue), we will add some content: thesis statement. In order to argue the point, the students will need a thesis in addition to the content of the on-level standard.

  10. On-Level to PreAP: Standard Clarification write a multi-paragraph essay to convey information about a topic that accurately synthesizes ideas from several sources.[17Aiv] Context: Students revise their own and others’ expository essays to ensure that information has been synthesized and communicated accurately. Students will work individually to produce writing. Include the correlating AP standard(s). Perhaps this standard could even be practiced in the context of a timed writing.

  11. On-Level to PreAP: Standard Clarification write a multi-paragraph essay to convey information about a topic that accurately synthesizes ideas from several sources.[17Aiv] Sample Assessment Item: Use the state provided rubric for expository writing. Add a prompt/rubric aligned to the format of an AP Synthesis prompt/rubric. Since this is for 8th graders, the prompt may include fewer and more accessible sources.

  12. On-Level to PreAP: Standard Clarification Next, add a new row with the label: Developing Habits of Mind To add the row: click the Layout tab and choose “Insert Below”

  14. DON’T FORGET TO SAVE IT! • SAVE this file according to the naming scheme: PAPCourseStandard-UnitName ex: PAPScience6.8a-UnitName Make sure all documents you create are saved/moved into the course folder within this PreAP AP Vertical Team network folder: • \\mis-itspc\instruction\PreAP-AP-Vertical-Teams
