  1. Nickie Cauthen ASM Biology Scholars, Assessment 2014

  2. My class and unit • My class • BIOL 1107: Principles of Biology for majors • Primarily freshman/some sophomores • Primarily biology majors; some chemistry, exercise science, or psychological science majors • About 40 students • My unit • The cell • Plant vs. animal cells • Organelles • Endomembrane system/secretory pathway • Ways to study cells

  3. Goals/objectives • Short version (more formally stated on alignment grid) • Learn the function of organelles/structures in plant and animal cells and how the organelles/structures are functionally related. • Learn the parts of the endomembrane system and the process of protein secretion. • Learn methods of studying cells and when to use them. • Practice higher order thinking with the content in these objectives.

  4. Week 1 • Castle top (green is in class; orange is out of class) • Scaffold the activities from low to higher order tasks to gain content knowledge and learn to use it in higher order thinking. • Friday: • Review student secretory pathway assign • Strip sequence (A5) • Higher order thinking skills assessment-model it; work in groups (A6) • Monday: • Come to consensus on functions in groups; class discussion • Explain concept sketches and model • Do sketch as group (A3) • Wednesday: • Review student sketch evaluations • Complete remaining concept sketches in groups. • Saturday/Sunday: • Compile functions of animal and plant cell organelles/structures (A1,2) • Online quiz • Tuesday: • Groups post sketch; each student evaluate other group’s sketch. (rubric) • Thursday: • Groups post sketches; each student evaluate other group’s sketches. (rubric) • Secretory pathway assignment (A4)-post

  5. Week 2 • Castle top (green is in class; orange is out of class) • Scaffold the activities from low to higher order tasks to gain content knowledge and learn to use it in higher order thinking. • Wednesday: • Work in groups to determine when to use methods (A8) • Create a decision tree using work in first bullet; instructor guided • Use decision tree to answer scenarios on how to study cells. • End unit. • Monday: • Discuss higher order thinking answers. • Learning team quiz (IFAT forms) (A7) • Saturday/Sunday: • Post answers to higher order thinking skills assessment (each group) • Tuesday: • Guided reading—methods to study cells • Online quiz
