  2. The Abolition Movement • The Abolitionist movement was an effort to end slavery. • Bring an end to slavery in a country that claimed to value personal freedom and believed that "all men are created equal."

  3. HARRIET TUBMAN • Former Slave and Abolitionist. • Conductor on the Underground Rail Road • Help around 300 people escape from bondage • Considered the Moses of her people

  4. Frederick Douglas • Former slave, speaker, and author • Spoke to white northerners about slavery to convince them to stand against it. • Wrote books and a newspaper called the North Star to convince white northerners to fight against slavery.

  5. JOHN BROWN • Radical Abolitionist extremist. • Killed five pro-slavery settlers in the Kansas Territory. • Led a raid on the U.S. arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia with the intent of giving the weapons acquired to slaves to start a slave uprising in the South.

  6. HARRIET BEECHER STOWE • Abolitionist and Author • Wrote a fictional book called Uncle Tom’s Cabin • Book shed light on the evils of slavery. • Convinced many northerners that slavery was bad and to fight against it. • Lincoln said “ So you are the little woman who started this great war”

  7. WILLIAM LLOYD GARRISON • Abolitionist, Journalist, and Philanthropist • Started an abolitionist newspaper called The Liberator • Founded the New England Antislavery Society • Founded the American Antislavery Society – a national organization.
