Investigate any situation which might lead to international problems. • The United Nations Security Council holds 5 permanent members and ten non-members. The elected non member hold their place on the council for a two year term. • The five permanent member of the Security Council are U.S, China, France, Russia, and United Kingdom.

  7. International Court of Justice • The International Court of Justice is located in the Peace Palace in the Hague, Netherlands. • The International Court of Justice takes care of two types of cases the first one is called Contentious Cases which settles legal disputes submitted by states. • Example • Arrest Warrant of 11 April 2000 (Democratic Republic of the Congo v. Belgium) • Construction of a Road in Costa Rica along the San Juan River (Nicaragua v. Costa Rica)  • The second one is called Advisory Proceedings which is giving advisory opinions on legal proceedings. • Example • Legality of the Use by a State of Nuclear Weapons in Armed Conflict • Legality of the Threat or Use of Nuclear Weapons

  10. Summary Slide • One action the UN might take to avoid another World War is stop any countries from trying to take over. • Another action the UN might take to avoid another World War is to react as fast as possible upon a situation before it can get big. • The Security Council is more powerful then the general assembly because they can make quick decisions. The general assembly has to host a vote that can be veto by the 5 permanent member of the council. (U.S, China, France, Russia, and United Kingdom) • I think the UN is a very important organization. It maintains peace in the world so people wouldn’t have to live through the pain of the war or others.
