  1. CPCS Demolition Plant Renewal Test Revision National Demolition Training Group

  2. Demolition Plant Renewal TestsIntroduction This presentational revision material has been developed by the NDTG to work alongside the revision material available through CPCS. It is recommended that this presentation is delivered as part of a toolbox talk session between the operator taking the renewal test and an in-house competent person. The presentation slides have been designed to offer ‘fact like statements’ to the operator on best practices when operating a demolition adapted 360 machine. You will require access to the internet to view this presentation in its entirety.

  3. Demolition Plant Renewal TestsContents Preparing for the Test General Responsibilities Using Attachments Demolishing Safely Machine Preparation Working at Height and Working Restrictions Working Efficiently

  4. Demolition Plant Renewal TestsPreparing for the Test Prior to taking the test, candidates are strongly advised to carefully study the factsheet produced by CPCS for the relevant item of plant. Please click here to view the Factsheets and click on the demolition plant option on the contents page. Note: you will be required to correctly answer a minimum of 12 out of 15 questions presented on the test. The NDTG strongly advises that you go through this PowerPoint presentation in it’s entirety prior to the test. The links to videos and further information are really useful too! Look out for this symbol to be navigated to further revision resources. We hope you find this revision material useful, but any questions that your may have that are not answered in this material, please contact the NDTG direct on 01442 217 144. The NDTG wishes you success with your upcoming test !!!

  5. Demolition Plant Renewal TestsGeneral Responsibilities Due to theft it may be necessary for all attachments to be taken from site to a more secure site or yard Operators of plant and their banksman need to agree hand or radio signals/codes prior to starting work. If you can see your banksman when carrying out the demolition process STOP work immediately and re assess the activity Your banksman must always be in a place of safety and should never be positioned within the drop zone

  6. Demolition Plant Renewal TestsGeneral Responsibilities- Continued If you know the method statement is wrong and don’t speak up before starting work, it may have serious consequences such as an unplanned collapse of a building and or injury When changing attachments the machine operator is in charge of all involved in the process Being under the influence of alcohol greatly affects your machine operating ability. Impairing visibility, your judgment of distance and ability to follow your safe system of work

  7. Demolition Plant Renewal TestsUsing Attachments Your machines are configured to carry the right weight attachments. Any others may cause it to tip when reaching out. The ground pressure across track frame will have been calculated prior to demolition. Be careful working at full reach as you don’t want to much weight on the idlers causing point loading. Be careful of sharp objects when working the attachment we don’t want any hydraulic spillages. Make sure you get the tool on the ground and prevent anymore spilling before cleaning up.

  8. Demolition Plant Renewal TestsUsing Attachments- continued Want some further reading on attachments- click on the image to view the NFDC Demolition Attachment Guidance Notes Make sure you depressurise attachment hoses as per the operators manual as there may be too much pressure in the line and may cause an injury or spillage. There are a lot of attachments on site. Be mindful to use the correct one as you won’t be able to reach the structure safely. Don’ forget, as the operator, you are in charge when you use the labourers to help change attachments.

  9. Demolition Plant Renewal TestsDemolishing Safely Ensure you maintain the correct boom and attachment position on slopes as a precaution to possible sliding or overturning. Check the slabs that you are working off against the structural engineers calculations to ensure the machine and materials are within the limits. Always maintain main tracks in line with the upper body and sprockets to the rear to ensure the best stability during demolition.

  10. Demolition Plant Renewal TestsDemolishing Safely- continued Want to view more Basher Bob & Ricky Rightway images- take a look at the Demolition Do’s & Don'ts Maintain your drop zones and materials placement within them even when winds increase. Only the designated demolition rig carrying out the work is authorised in the drop zone. All sevicesor cut lines need to be checked for complete separation prior to works commences. All ground investigations must be completed to ensure that the ground area can take the machine that is being delivered.

  11. Demolition Plant Renewal TestsMachine Preparation Regardless of your position you must inform your supervisor if you feel there are areas incorrect within the method statement and explain your concerns. When changing a direct to pins attachment ensure that your labourer stands in a position of safety preferably in direct vision of you and the attachment bracket to guide the yoke in. Please be careful when changing an attachment. After use, wear appropriate PPE to handle the hoses and be mindful the hydraulic will be hot.

  12. Demolition Plant Renewal TestsMachine Preparation- Continued Want further information? Click here to view the NDTG Pre-Start & Maintenance video for High Reach Machines Fully automatic quick hitches aren’t infallible so please visually check them once connected to attachment to ensure fully secure. As a precaution against hand injury and possible amputation ensure hands are nowhere near the pin holes at any time. On completion of daily checks please report all defects regardless of size as our work can make these worse and the competent fitter will make the decision on work commencement. Your pre start daily checks are essential as if the machine isn’t working or performing as it should those around you may be at risk of injury.

  13. Demolition Plant Renewal TestsWorking at Height and Restricted Areas When carrying out top down demolition using mini diggers ensure the suitable edge protection is in place to prevent plant falling. Monitor your machine when working in a confined area as it may over heat due to reduce air and dusts. When working in a confined or restricted area ensure that the machine can be fuelled. Ensure all operatives maintain a safe distance from machinery and all operators are aware of operative locations as HSE identify being hit by machinery is the second largest killer. Ensure your edge protection is at least half the height of the machine being used when working top down, even if this means raising it where required.

  14. Demolition Plant Renewal TestWorking Efficiently For further information on working efficiently, why not explore the wealth of NFDC Guidance Notes by clicking on this link. Here you will find the following notes that you may find useful: Top Down Demolition, Safe use of Attachments and High Reach Demolition To reduce fuel wastage turn off the machine engines when not using it. Report all defects even cracked windscreens as your view of your work will be impaired. Ensure that you remove excess materials during the demolition process as it will increase the weight and you could overload the floor areas. Shears need to be used to dismantle the structure to reduce vibration travelling through the buildings either side. Machine mounted Hydraulic hammers/breakers should only be used for short periods in one spot to ensure efficient working and effectiveness.
