Historical Overview • In 1940, the Warsaw Ghetto was established and all 400,000 Jews from Warsaw and the surrounding area Jews moved into a 1.3 square mile area • Of these 400,000 Jews, 265,000 were sent to extermination camps, 35,000 were killed in the ghetto, and the remaining 70-80,000 Jews were sent to labor camps • The Pianist is the story of one brave and lucky man who escaped this fate

Synopsis of The Pianist • Recounts the true account of one of Europe’s most famous piano player’s struggle to survive in Warsaw • As Poland is conquered by the Nazis, Polish Jews are denied their human rights and later forced into ghettos • WladyslawSzpilman is stripped of everything–his identity, family, job, house, and wellbeing • All that remained was a man battling the elements and fascist Germany to survive
