  1. This summer I was hired to work as an intern at LAERF, the Lewisville Aquatic Ecosystem Research Facility. I learned a lot and had many exciting experiences! Over the course of 8 weeks I kept a log of things I learned and did, such as names of different plants or the use of different chemicals. [Click on the page to view it enlarged]

[Click on the page to view it enlarged] The beautiful facility had outdoor pools and cultures, and indoor well stocked labs. Learning from the many professionals there, I gained inside and outside lab experience. This will really come in handy if I choose to pursue a research position. A caged plant in a pond, used to observe plant growth in a natural environment. Me in the Main Chemistry lab, holding a machine called the Titration Manager (which we lovingly refer to as TIM). I am testing pond water samples - right beneath my hand, the probes for pH, conductivity, and alkalinity are visible. A cluster of mesocosms, used to grow and observe underwater plants in a controlled environment. I also got a lot of work experience and learned about the responsibilities in holding a job. I learned to work cohesively in a team and how to be a good team player.

Learning from the many professionals there, I gained inside and outside lab experience. This will really come in handy if I choose to pursue and research position. Towards the end of my internship, using many of my observations of what was happening around LAERF, I wrote a research paper; I chose my topic to be over the outdoor ponds and the grass carp in them. I will be able to claim a research credit through LISD with my research paper. Click [here] to view the paper. Me in the Main Chemistry lab, holding a machine called the Titration Manager (which we lovingly refer to as TIM). I am testing pond water samples - right beneath my hand, the probes for pH, conductivity, and alkalinity are visible. I’m very glad I had the chance to work as an intern for LAERF. It was so much more than just shadowing someone at a job – all of what I did involved me hands on. I could also explore the field of environmental studies, which I had previously never thought about as a career choice. After LAERF, however, I am considering majoring in environmental engineering and would love working outside as a job in the future.
