  1. NY Hall of Science!!

  2. Motivation:

  3. Purpose • Concretely relate NY Hall of Science exhibitions to content standards and real life • Use scientific method to carry out, analyze, and present an experiment. • Share understanding of scientific concepts with the community and funders.

  4. Process Flow Chart

  5. scientific method, using scientific equipment, NY content standards (forces & motion, chemical & physical properties, microbes, etc.), expectations at the Hall of Science, science fair instructions. Lessons & Pre-work Hall of Science Visit Debrief & Post-work Science Fair

  6. Pick your 3 favorite exhibits and answer the following questions:1. How is this exhibit relevant to the content standards we covered in class?2. What kind of real-world applications does this exhibit have?3. Think of a few ideas of how this exhibit can inspire your science fair project. Lessons & Pre-work Hall of Science Visit Debrief & Post-work Science Fair

  7. Discuss your response to the 3 questions in a group.Give each other feedback.Pick the best idea for a science fair project (inspired by an exhibit at NY Hall of Science), write a proposal, and submit for approval. Lessons & Pre-work Hall of Science Visit Debrief & Post-work Science Fair

  8. Using the scientific method, select, carry out, and present an experiment at the science fair.(include introduction, testable question, hypothesis, materials, procedures, data/results, conclusion, and demo for ExCr.)Share applications of science in everyday life with the community. Exemplary projects will also be displayed in the hallways after the fair for Manos a Manos. Lessons & Pre-work Hall of Science Visit Debrief & Post-work Science Fair

  9. Forces and Motion (Physics – 8th) • NY State Standards • Balanced/Unbalanced Forces • Displacement • Velocity • Acceleration • Friction • Frame of reference • Inertia & Gravity • Newton’s Laws Lab-Aids Kit

  10. Sports Challenge Exhibition Highlights • Balance Challenge • Bounce Challenge • Climbing Challenge • Pitching Challenge • Race Challenge • Trajectory Challenge

  11. Example Projects for Physics • Which surface opposes motion the most? (inspired by Bounce Challenge) • Which bridge design is the strongest? (inspired by Climbing Challenge) • How does the weight and nose shape of an airplane affect its motion? (inspired by Pitching Challenge)

  12. Guests/Speakers • Kirsten Stoner • Hospital for Special Surgery • How forces affect our body (bones)
