  1. IEEE All Society Research Project: 2004 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by IEEE Research Corporate Strategy and Communications

  2. Overview of Project

  3. Overview of Project • Background: This is the second All Society Research Project (ASRP) 2003: examined current society members 2004: examined non-renewing society members • Current project’s purpose: gather data from individuals who maintained their IEEE membership but dropped their society membership in one or more IEEE societies • Project team: 36 Society representatives, one staff member from RAD, one staff member from TAD and IEEE research staff • All Societies participated except • IEEE Broadcast Technology Society who had an individual project already scheduled • IEEE Product Safety Engineering Society because they did not have members in 2003

  4. Research Goals • Provide societies with information about non-renewing members • Identify the reasons for dropping membership • Help identify potential improvements in product and services • Help identify possible strategies for membership growth and improved member retention • Understand IEEE society members and the value of society membership

  5. Methodology: Questionnaire Development • Consensus process for format and wording • Developed a template questionnaire • Served as the framework for society surveys • Contained standard and customizable questions • Each society representative could customize the questionnaire for his or her own society

  6. Methodology: Population • 33,683 IEEE Higher-grade members who dropped at least one society membership (no Affiliates) • Of the 33,683, 8% did not have an e-mail address on file and another 2% did not want mailings • This resulted in a total of 30,376 individual members who could be surveyed • Number of “dropped” Society members ranged from a low of 161 to a high of 12,116/per Society.

  7. Methodology: Stratified Sample • 32 of the 36 participating Societies had fewer than 1,200 “dropped” members • All of these members were eligible to participate in this survey • There were four Societies (CAS, CS, ComSoc and SP) with more than 1,200 “dropped” members • Approximately 1,200 members were randomly selected from each of these Societies and eligible to participate • In order not to overburden participants, a member who dropped more than two Societies was only asked to comment on two dropped Societies • This did not affect approximately 94% of the sample because these members dropped only one or two Societies • The remaining 6% of members were systematically pared down to make sure they were only asked about two Societies

  8. Methodology: Final Sample Asked to Participate • 17,941 current IEEE Higher-grade members with an email address on file who dropped a Society membership they held in 2003. • These 17,941 individual members represent 20,513 dropped Society memberships.

  9. Methodology: Data Collection • An e-mail invitation explaining the project and including a personalized URL was sent mid-June 2004 • The URL link connected participants to a web survey pre-programmed to only ask questions related the Societies they had dropped • Reminder was sent to non-respondents about one or two weeks after the launch • Data collection started on 17 June and ended 12 July, when the survey closed for analysis

  10. IEEE Education Society:Overview

  11. Response Rates • 372 current IEEE members who dropped their IEEE Education Society membership were invited to participate • A total of 118 former Society members completed surveys for a 32% response rate • Not all respondents answered all questions

  12. IEEE Education Society:Demographics Note: “Population” refers to the total number of active IEEE members who dropped their IEEE Education Society membership in 2004.

  13. Member Grade

  14. Age of Respondents Sample Answering: 116 responses

  15. Length of IEEE Membership Sample Answering: 118 responses

  16. IEEE Region

  17. Current Membership in Other Societies

  18. Dropped Other Societies?

  19. Other Society Dropped(those dropped by 3+ respondents)

  20. Detailed Findings

  21. Which of the following best describes your current employment status? Other See Appendix

  22. Which one of the following categories best describes you?(Select one.) Specify field; Other See Appendix

  23. Have you changed employer or started a new job within the past 18 months?

  24. Some members have suggested that they view their total IEEE investment as a package (Membership + regional assessments + optional pubs), and that there is a maximum price they are willing to pay for the package. Once their investment reaches this maximum, they start to cancel Society memberships or optional pubs. Is this how you view your IEEE charges?

  25. Other, please explain (From previous question) • semi retired • Yes, Couldn't keep up with reading, Ran out of storage space • I have a difficult economic situation • Total cost versus involvement • Actually no, but depreciation of national currency played increasing role in decisions • do not know • I am Life Senior Member

  26. In the above question, you mentioned that you have a maximum dollar amount that you are willing to pay for IEEE memberships and optional publications. What is this amount? See Appendix for details

  27. Our records indicate that you held a membership in the IEEE Education Society in 2003 but did not renew in 2004. Is this correct?

  28. What was the major reason why you did not renew your membership in the IEEE Education Society? • Open-ended comments, please see APPENDIX

  29. From reasons listed below, select all the reasons that influenced your decision not to renew.(Top 10 Reasons)

  30. From reasons listed below, select all the reasons that influenced your decision not to renew.(Bottom Reasons)

  31. How likely are you to rejoin IEEE Education within the next three years?

  32. How long were you an IEEE Education Society member?

  33. Please select the main reasons why you originally joined the IEEE Education Society.(Select up to three that apply.)

  34. How well did the IEEE Education Society provide opportunities and services in…?

  35. Overall, how satisfied were you with your IEEE Education Society membership?

  36. In the previous question, you indicated that you were not “Highly Satisfied” with your IEEE Education membership. Please tell us why you feel this way. • Open-ended comments, please see APPENDIX

  37. What else could the IEEE Education Society do to make you want to rejoin? • Open-ended comments, please see APPENDIX

  38. Please include any additional comments you may have regarding the IEEE Education Society. • Open-ended comments, please see APPENDIX

  39. APPENDIX Responses are shown as they were typed by respondents. Typos and grammatical errors were not fixed.
