GAMSAT • One exam each year in March (capital cities) • Registration deadline: late January • Format: • Section I: Reasoning in Humanities & Social Sciences (MCQ) • Section II: Written Communication (2x30 min writing tasks) • Section III: Reasoning in Biological/Physical Sciences (MCQ) • - assumes 1st Year University Biology/Chemistry & Year 12 Physics (20%)

Interviews • Held at Waurn Ponds in September • Multiple Mini-Interview (MMI) format • Consists of ten 5-minute stations addressing each of the Deakin course outcomes: • communication skills • commitment to rural and regional practice • self-directed learning • teamwork • professionalism • motivation for a career in medicine • evidence-based practice • social justice • health promotion • effective use of resources

  16. Selection for interview • Applications: • via GEMSES by mid-June, 2011 • For interview: • Hurdles: GAMSAT ≥ 50 (each section) • GPA ≥ 5.0 • Ranking: GAMSAT + GPA + Bonus • ~200 applicants (1.5 x intake)

  17. Student Offers • Ranking: GAMSAT + GPA + Bonus + MMI • 130 places offered (incl. conditional) • Three different types: • Medical Rural Bonded Scholarships (MRBS) [x4] • Unbonded (CSP/HECS) [x93] • Bonded Medical Places (BMP) [x33]

Types of Student Place • MRBS: • Australian citizens or permanent residents • $24,594 for 2011 (indexed) - tax free, no means test • Restricted practise for 6 continuous years after completion of postgraduate training • Unbonded: • Standard CSP place with no post-course restrictions • BMP: • Work for length of course in District of Workforce Shortage • Within 1 year of Fellowship or 16 years of course • Incl. up to 2 year prevocational + vocational training
