Inter-Services Intelligence • Formed in 1948 at the initiative of Major General Cawthorne, Deputy Chief of Pakistan army and Major General Rees, chief of Indo-Pakistan Border force. • Motivation provided by British Home and Foreign Offices. • Until military takeover in 1958, ISI worked as part of MI and reported through the Army Chief. ISI was basically formed under UK supervision as a wing of military intelligence to serve UK’s strategic ops in Afghanistan, Central Asia part of USSR and West China. ISI HQ located next to Kashmir Highway, a gray building skirted by Jinnah Stadium, Rose Garden, Gool Market, Sitara market, about 5 KM from Islamabad Dawn Office. Two other offices at Warid Market and Constitution Avenue

Tool of political interference. • Public & Services Group (P&SG)- It functions in close liaison with Chiefs of Staff Committee and maintains media liaison. • Joint Intelligence X (JIX)- Top-secret depository of the ISI encompassing operational matters and coordination between other operational bureaus. • A NEW DIVISION HAS BEEN OPENED IN 2005 IN JIX TO EXCLUSIVELY DEAL WITH VIP SECURITY-PRACTICALLY PRESIDEN’S SECURITY. PRESENT IN CHARGE IS BRIG. SHAHID MIRZA.
