  2. Starting to Heat Up JFK and the Cold War

  3. Let the Word Go Forth • Let the word go forth from this time and place…that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans-born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage-and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed…Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and the success of liberty.”

  4. A More Flexible Response • Didn’t want nuclear war • Build up of conventional troops and weapons • Creates the Special Forces-soldiers trained in guerilla warfare • Known as the Green Berets for their green berets

  5. The Peace Corps • Organization that sent young Americans to perform humanitarian services in developing nations • Requires rigorous training • Spend two years abroad • Constructing new sewage systems • Teaching English • Building roads • Building schools

  6. Space Race Revisited • “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon.” • Saturn V: world’s largest and most powerful rocket ever built • Enough velocity to escape Earth’s gravitational pull

  7. The Eagle Has Landed • July 16, 1969 • Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins land on the moon • “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”

  9. The Wall Goes Up • Krushchev wanted democracy out of Berlin • Kennedy refuses • Krushchev builds a wall cutting off East Berlin • Physical symbol of Cold War

  10. Cuban Missile Crisis • USSR puts nukes in Cuba • Blockade of Cuba • Secret negotiations-USSR would remove its missiles if US removed missiles in Turkey • Crisis averted

  11. Close to Nuclear War • Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest we’d come to nuclear war since WWII • Humiliating retreat out of Cuba began Krushchev’s downfall • Showed Soviet inferiority • Soviets start building up their military • Soviet build up=American buildup
