How to Maintain an Academic Tone • Be unbiased and fair Avoid being one-sided Be professional and diplomatic • Use the first or third person Avoid second person “you” Use “I,” “people,” or “they” (NOTE: do not use “I think” or “I feel” • Be clear and specific Avoid ambiguous pronouns “he” and contractions “can’t” Use direct references “Ms. Tejada” and “cannot” • Do not over generalize Avoid “since the beginning of time” or “the entire world” Write within the boundaries of the text • Do not use conversational cues Avoid using “well,” “I mean,” “like,” and “am I right?” Use transitional words and phrases
