  1. Economic DevelopmentSupported by Technology Infrastructure Joshua Broder Tilson Consulting, Planning, Engineering and Project Management for telecom and IT

  2. Agenda My prospective Why should we care about technology infrastructure projects? First things first- objectives Planning framework Execution

  3. My prospective • Grew up in New England during the decline of the industrial economy and the emergence of the Internet • Became a telecom/IT project guy as an Army officer, learned about the importance of execution • Own a tech infrastructure planning, engineering, and construction company, cut our teeth on ARRA broadband and smart grid, 2-100 people in 6 years. We don’t compete with carriers, we help communities (~50/year) and carriers (mobility/fiber) plan and build

  4. Why should we care about planned tech infrastructure? • Because we have sea ports, airports, mill space, and roads already • Exporting our ideas is going to be a bigger economic engine than our physical products • Technology is just a tool, not an end unto itself • Limited resources applied to the right tech to achieve a community’s specific objectives

  5. Planning framework • Start with economic development objectives • What are table stakes for the residential base? • How will the community differentiate? • What platform is needed to meet objectives? • What does the platform need to do? • How much will it cost? • Applications: • Broadband • Smart grid • Intelligent transportation • Cloud • Technologies • Fiber • Wireless • Data center • Software

  6. Don’t forget! • Aggregate demand and look for natural affinity groups • Check to see what private providers can do first- generally a low awareness about carrier capabilities in communities • Mobility matters • Market failure = potential subsidy needed • Your community built the roads- you can do anything!
