  4. NTPS Facility Advisory Committee Future Bond Planning Program Needs – Middle School Reconfiguration • Key Issues that were Considered -- Transitions -- Connection to School -- Academic Achievement -- Local Considerations

  5. NTPS Facility Advisory Committee Future Bond Planning Transitions • A 2-grade middle school requires two transitions over the course of two years. • A 3-grade middle school spreads out transitions

  6. NTPS Facility Advisory Committee Future Bond Planning Connection to School • A 6-8 model increases the likelihood of students and parents feeling an increased connection to their middle school • Allows for student continuity of program behaviorally and academically during crucial formative years • In the 2004 Healthy Youth Survey, 6th grade students reported higher incidents of bullying and lower commitment to school than their 8th grade counterparts

  7. NTPS Facility Advisory Committee Future Bond Planning Academic Achievement • While research in the area is limited, we have a strong belief that the continuity of program a 6-8 middle school provides will result in increased academic performance

  8. NTPS Facility Advisory Committee Future Bond Planning Local Considerations • Opportunity for academic acceleration of 6th grade students • Collaboration between staff in grades 6-8 • Math and science instruction would likely improve through content experts delivering the curriculum • Improved science facilities at middle school provides for increased lab opportunities • Curricular alignment with textbooks 6-8
