Historical Materials that could be used in the design • The Forest of Dean is historically an area of mining, quarrying and foresting. • Iron ore was mined there by the Romans and then until the 1900s. • Robert Mushet in 1856 Invented the first commercially produced steel alloy in the Forest of Dean. • Coal was mined on a large scale from the industrial revolution until the 1960s. It is still mined by local people in small mines. • Stone has been quarried locally for houses and commercial uses throughout local history. • Forestry has been carried out commercially and environmentally throughout local history.

  5. Partners historical and material links that could be used in design. • What historical and industrial links can be made between all partners? ?

Cordoba,Spain • Cordoba,Spain has a rich history especially in architecture. • Metal crafts, and especially iron forging and copper and brass work have given Andalucia a special identity. • Stonecraft is prevalent in its beautiful moorish and Spanish buildings and quarrying still operates in the area.

  7. ZABRZE, Poland • It was once the Pittsburgh of Poland, home to Europe’s deepest coal mine, steeped in centuries of tradition. Has strong historical links to Coal and steel industries. • It has strong cultural and industrial similarities to other partners.

  8. Graz, Austria • Graz has large industries, including manufacturing, automobile production, energy and engineering industries. • Historically a rail and industrial centre, Graz has ironworks and steelworks which again have links similar to other partners.

  9. Jurancon,France • Famously known for its wine the area also has a diverse range of industries. • From the 1950s to the 1990s the area depended on the production of natural gas and sulphur which were discovered nearby at Lacq. • Today the mainstays of employment are engineering, tourism and agriculture.

  10. Nova Siri, Italy • Nova Siri is situated in a panoramic position close to the Ionic Coast in the Gulf of Taranto, although it has no industrial similarities to the other partners, the region surrounding it still has similarities, that could be linked to the unified design, such as stone built buildings and wooded hillsides.

  11. Zonguldak, Turkey • Zonguldak is capital of Zonguldak Province in the Black Sea region of Turkey. It was established in 1849 as a port town for the nearby coal mines in Ereğli and the coal trade remains its main economic activity. • With industrial similarities to other partners, materials for the sundial could be linked.

  12. LidkӦping, Sweden • Lidköping is located in Sweden’s historical cradle where the area’s agricultural communities meet Sweden’s largest lake. • In its region it has Stone and sand Quarries, that have existed in the area for a 100 years. This industry also links to other partners industries that could be integrated into the design of the sundial.

  13. Roman, Romania • Roman is located in north-eastern Romania, in the historic region of Moldavia, at the mouth of the Moldova River. • It became the target of industrialization: in 1957, the steel tubes factory started production. Roman then became an important industrial center in Romania. • Steel again being a link to some partners local historic industries.

  14. Proposed partnership student involvement • Maths and Physics students to measure Earth radius after Erathostenesmethod and also to be involved in setting out the construction of the sundials. • History students to research the background behind each partners sundial and develop a display for at least one of them. • Construction and engineering students to construct the sundials. • All students to take an active part in designing the sundial.
