  2. "Engineering Geology is the science devoted to the investigation, study and solution of the engineering and environmental problems which may arise as the result of the interaction between geology and the works and activities of man as well as to the prediction and of the development of measures for prevention or remediation of geological hazards." (IAEG Statutes, 1992).

  3. About IAEG • IAEG was founded in 1964 and is affiliated to the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). • IAEG is a worldwide scientific society with more than 5,200 members and 59 national groups. • The official languages of the IAEG are English and French.

  4. The aims of the IAEG are: • to promote and encourage the advancement of Engineering Geology through technological activities and research • to improve teaching and training in Engineering Geology, and • to collect, evaluate and disseminate the results of engineering geological activities on a worldwide basis.

  5. IAEG Major Activities: • EDITS A QUATERLY JOURNAL, the Bulletin of Engineering Geology and the Environment published by Springer Verlag, containing original scientific papers in English or in French, book reviews, meeting reports and geodiary. • OPERATES COMMISSIONS, led by eminent world specialists, which review the current state of the art on various topics, promoting international cooperation among geologists and engineers who have an interest in engineering geology and related environmental issues.

  6. Bulletin of Engineering Geology and the Environmenthttp://www.springerlink.com/content/1435-9537/ • Publisher Springer Berlin / Heidelberg • ISSN 1435-9529 (Print) • ISSN 1435-9537 (Online) • The Bulletin will continue to publish papers in English and French • With the availability of 432 text pages per year

IAEG activities are also organised on the occasion of the International Geological Congress. In addition, the IAEG sponsors various international symposia and regional conferences organized by national committees on specific topics. • PUBLISHES A NEWSLETTER, sent twice a year to all members of the IAEG. • AWARDS every two years A MEDAL AND A PRIZE

  9. IAEG awards and prizes • The Hans Cloos Medal is the senior award presented by IAEG, given to an engineering geologist of outstanding merit in commemoration of the " founder of geomechanics ". The recipient should therefore be a person of international repute who has made a major contribution to engineering geology in his/her written papers or to the development of engineering geology and/or the IAEG in their own area.

  10. IAEG awards and prizes (cont’d) • The Richard Wolters’ Prize specifically recognises meritorious scientific achievement by a younger member of the engineering geology profession and is awarded to honour Dr. Wolters’ many contributions to international understanding and co-operation.
