  2. Previous course structure • Seven optional courses (10 credits each) • General paper (10 credits) • All assessed by exam in May • Dissertation (40 credits) • PROBLEM: assessment had too much weight on end of year exams • Not enough opportunity for feedback

  3. New structure started 2010-2011 • Six option courses plus General paper(10 credits each) • Most options assessed by exam in May • Future move towards assessment by essay • New “Tutorial Course” (10 credits) • Small group teaching in blocks 2 and 3 • Assessment through a 1000 word assessment at end of block 3 (feedback will be available) • Dissertation (40 credits)

  4. Joint Honours • You will do up to 4 option courses, which may include the tutorial course (but doesn’t have to) • Joint honours students don’t do general paper. • Joint honours students usually choose to do dissertation in psychology (needed for BPS accreditation) • For BPS accreditation, need to make sure that your courses across years 3 and 4 cover the 5 BPS core areas: • Social, developmental, cognitive, differential, biological; also Methodology

  5. Dissertations • Students usually work in pairs • Suggested project descriptions will soon be available on the web http://www.psy.ed.ac.uk/psy_students/undergraduate/index.php • Feel free to approach the relevant member of staff. • Deadline for choosing project is week 3 of semester 1 next year • Dissertation handed in around mid March 2012 • Poster session for dissertations to be held in early December (an opportunity for feedback on design from Psychology staff)

  6. What you have to do now • Fill in your course choice form (deadline Monday 23rd May, Psychology Library; or email the form to Liz Wright: e.wright@ed.ac.uk) • Short course descriptions are (or soon will be) available via drps on the web: http://www.drps.ed.ac.uk • Rank your preference for courses in each block. We will do our best to allocate you to your first choices
