Interviewing Preparation Putting Your Best Foot Forward
Getting Ready... • Take the time to prep! • Learn about the company where you will be interviewing. • Research, Research, Research! • Have a specific position in mind when you are interviewing. • Practice an interview at the Career Center.
Dress to Impress... • Be well groomed. First appearances matter! • Line-up an interview wardrobe. • Professional suit, tie, freshly pressed shirt and dress shoes make you look like you know what your doing. • Carry a professional folio/organizer.
Interview Behavior • Mind your P’s and Q’s. • Do not chew gum, eat food or drink! • Turn off your cell phone while at the interview. (Calls can wait.) • Know where you are heading before you leave the house.
The Interview • Leave yourself enough time to get to the interview and check your appearance. - 10 minutes should suffice. Being late is a bad way to start. • Remember the name of the person interviewing you. • Have several copies of your resume ready.
During the interview... • Relax and answer each question concisely. • avoid simple “yes” or “no” responses • Use your body language to show interest (nod, make eye contact, don’t slouch). • Avoid making negative comments about your current job!
Answering tough questions... • Prepare for the tough questions. • Tell me about yourself. • What is one of your weaknesses? • Have 2-3 points ready for these types of questions. • Practice makes perfect!
Prepare your own questions... • Ask specific questions about the company, not just generalities you could find on their website. • Avoid asking about salary, vacation, and sick leave during the initial interview.
Wrapping it up... • Remember to thank the interviewer for their time. • Be courteous to everyone you meet in the office. • Don’t forget to shake hands and smile when you are done. Leave them with your best!!
