  2. Available(adjective) Definition: Ready for use, at hand. Synonyms: obtainable, on-hand Antonym: unobtainable “Are you available for extra help tonight?” he asked.

  3. Cater(verb) Definitions: • To satisfy the needs of; • To try to make things easy & pleasant for; • To supply food & service. Synonyms: provide, pamper, indulge Antonyms: deny, frustrate, refuse When I’m ill, my dad always caters to my every need. He fluffs my pillows, makes me soup, and tells me funny stories.

  4. Customary(adjective) Definition: usual, expected, routine Synonyms: regular, normal, traditional Antonyms: strange, odd, unusual, untraditional It’s customary to salute the flag each day at school to show our patriotism and loyalty to our country.

  5. Dissuade(verb) Definition: To persuade to NOT do something. Synonym: discourage Antonym: persuade We need to dissuadeFrankie from skating down those stairs!

  6. Entrepreneur(noun) Definition: A person who starts up and takes on the risk of a business. Steve Jobs is a famous entrepreneur who began Apple.

  7. Firebrand(noun) Definitions: • A troublemaker; • An extremely emotional or energetic person; • A piece of burning wood. Synonyms: hothead, rabble-rouser, agitator Antonyms: peacemaker, pacifier The young firebrand broke every classroom rule within minutes of entering our science class.

  8. Hazard(noun, verb) Definitions: Noun: a risk or peril Verb: to expose to danger or harm; to gamble Synonyms: Noun – danger Verb - venture Broken branches and fallen trees posed a hazard to safe travel. I will hazard a guess that since you did not study, you won’t do well on today’s test.

  9. Homicide(noun) Definition: the killing of one person by another Synonyms: murder, manslaughter Popular shows often feature criminal cases such as the unsolved homicide of Molly Bish.

  10. Indifference(noun) Definition: lack of interest or concern Synonyms: apathy, unconcern Antonyms: interest, enthusiasm I have an indifference regarding the outcome of sporting events because I just don’t find them interesting, but I’m passionate about neighborhood recycling.

Indignant(adjective) Definition: filled with resentment or anger over something unjust, unworthy, or mean Synonyms: offended, outraged, resentful, exasperated Antonyms: pleased, delighted, overjoyed, elated I’m indignant that she allowed the store’s door to close right in the face of an elderly, disabled man. It’s beyond rude!

  12. Indispensible(adjective) Definition: absolutely necessary and not to be neglected Synonyms: essential, crucial, vital Antonyms: unnecessary, nonessential Water is indispensible to life as without it we would perish in a matter of days.

  13. Lubricate(verb) Definitions: • To apply oil or grease; • To make smooth, slippery, or easier to use. Synonyms: oil, grease Oil is used to lubricate the engines of vehicles so they will run smoothly and efficiently, while education is used to lubricate the minds of students.

  14. Mutual(adjective) Definition: shared, felt, or shown equally by two or more Synonyms: shared, joint, reciprocal Antonyms: one-sided, unilateral We came to a mutual agreement that we’d share equal time and resources on our science fair project.

  15. Pelt(noun, verb) Definitions: Noun: the skin and fur of an animal; Verb: to throw a stream of things; to hurry Synonyms: bombard, shower, pepper, run My mom is getting a vest made from the pelt of a deer she hunted. We got in so much trouble for pelting cars with snowballs.

  16. Plague(noun, verb) Definitions: Noun: an easily spread disease that causes many deaths; Verb: to bother or annoy Synonyms: epidemic, pester The bubonic plague was widespread in the Middle Ages. My little sister plagues me with her questions!

  17. Poised(adjective, verb) Definitions: • Balanced or suspended; • Calm, controlled, ready for action. Synonyms: ready, confident Antonyms: nervous, tense I knew my cat was poised for the kill as he was crouched with his tail twitching smartly side to side. Soon there would be one less mouse! The president shows poise during all of his speeches, speaking smoothly, calmly, and clearly.

  18. Regime(noun) Definition: a government in power; a period of rule (Hint: this word has a negative connotation!) Synonyms: administration, rule The regime in North Korea is ruled solely by one cruel man.

  19. Retard(verb) Definition: to make slow, delay, hold back Synonyms: restrain, impeded, slow down Antonyms: hasten, increase, speed up According to some, the American economy is retarded by slow job growth.

Transparent(adjective) Definitions: • Easy to see through or detect • Easily understood or recognized Synonyms: clear, obvious Antonyms: opaque, indistinct, smoky, frosted It was transparent that her excuse for missing the meeting was a lie as she could not make eye contact and kept twisting her hair.

  21. Unscathed(adjective) Definition: unharmed, not injured Synonyms: unhurt, sound, intact Antonyms: injured, damaged, harmed, hurt Will this fox remain unscathed after the lion is done pursuing it, or will the lion be successful in its hunt?
