Stereotyping VS Perception: What is the difference between stereotyping and perception?
Perception: Stereotyping: • Definition: A generalized picture of a person, created without taking the whole person into account; to make such a generalization. • Definition: a way of regarding, understanding, or interpreting something; a mental impression.
Self Perception: • What is your self perception? • Describe yourself in five (5) sentences.
Self Perception: • Definition: An awareness of the characteristics that constitute one’s self. • What is your self perception? • Describe yourself in five (5) sentences.
Self Perception: Now, from the list on the next slide, select five (5) adjectives that best match your self perception.
How Do Others Perceive You? • How are you stereotyped? • What would people say about you? • Please write five (5) sentences

Envelope and Paper Distribution Please write your name on the envelope. Please count to be sure you have at least twenty seven (27) slips of paper.
Directions: Please give this activity some serious thought and consideration. Your words may change a person’s self perception.
Directions: • Now, you will be selecting two (2) personality adjectives for each person here in class. • These personality adjectives will then be written on the slips of paper you have. • Write two (2) adjectives on one (1) piece please.
Directions: • If you are honestly giving this activity some thought, consideration, and justification, this will take you some time to do. • Although you don’t need to write why you’ve chosen these words, you must have some justification.
Binder Check Tomorrow: • Tomorrow, Friday, you will be leaving your Critical Thinking binder with me. • We have written the date on everything. • Even if there wasn’t a blank for us. • Be sure all of your handouts and notes are in order. • Ascending or descending order is acceptable.

Reflection: • Does your description of others’ interpretations match with how they described you? • Based on the results in your envelope, are you portraying yourself in a way in which you are proud? • If there are negative adjectives, do you agree with them? • How can you change this? • What adjective made you most proud and why? • Overall, are you glad to see how people perceive you?
