  2. Do Now • On a piece of paper, write down all the character traits that you think people like Obama and MLK, Jr. needed to be successful. Write as many traits as you can think of! • Once you cannot think of anymore, begin writing why you think a person would need that trait.

  3. Develop your Character.Maximize your Potential. • Zest (n.): approaching life with excitement and energy  Throw your fist in the air and shout “yes!” • Grit (n.): finishing what one starts, despite obstacles  Grit your teeth and shout “grrr”

  4. Develop your Character.Maximize your Potential. • Self-control (n.): regulating what one feels and does; being self-disciplined (shaking your head no to show that you can restrain) • Curiosity (n.): taking an interest in experience for its own sake; finding things fascinating (thinking man pose or scratch temple)

  5. Develop your Character.Maximize your Potential. • Integrity: speaking the truth and presenting oneself sincerely and genuinely (hand on heart) • Leadership: encouraging a group of which one is a valued member to accomplish all that they can (stand up tall)

  6. Develop your Character.Maximize your Potential. • Optimism: hopefulness and confidence about the future or the successful outcome of something (smile big!) • Gratitude: the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness

  7. Practice Sentences! • Choose one character trait you’ve never heard of and write a sentence using the trait and telling about a time you’ve shown that trait 

  8. Character Traits & Today’s Class • Obama insisted that we must make goals in order to reach our full potential. At the same time, King insisted that we must develop both our intellect and our character. Today, we are going to synthesize both of those ideas. • Your task is to decide which 2 character strengths you already have and to choose 3 character strengths that you will work to develop this year. • For the strengths you will develop, you will also come up with 3 things you will do to show that you have developed those traits. • You have 20 minutes.

  9. Share! • One of the best ways to help us remember our goals is to share them out loud! • So, decide which character trait you would like to share. IN COMPLETE SENTENCES, share: • The trait you will develop • Why you want to develop it • 3 things that you will do to show you are developing that trait
