Evaluate • justify the reasons for their selection including our understanding of life on Mars today; • include critical information such as the abiotic materials that can be used to support the biotic environment; • give examples of how the organism could potentially exist in that particular landing site specifically including genetic variations; and • consider the potential for life not only in the present environment, but in past environments.

Extend • Have students select extremophiles that could potentially live on Mars and be producers for other extremophiles, acting in primary succession • Use the Marsbound! activity found at http://marsed.asu.edu/lesson-plans-marsbound to have students plan a mission to Mars looking for extremophiles at their proposed landing site using Engineering Practices and the Iterative Design Cycle.
