  1. Globalization CGW 4U Mr.Harper

  2. What is Globalization? • Globalization is the trend towards increased interconnections among the world’s economic, technological, political, cultural, and geographic systems.

  3. Dubai • Many would argue that Dubai is perhaps the most globalized place in the world today. • It is a city, within an Emirate (state ruled by a single ruler) within the United Arab Emirates (7 different Emirates that form a single country) • In a region where oil has fueled most development, Dubai (a city with little oil) has relied on its role as a trading hub to finance its massive development

  4. Dubai is about half the size of the Greater Toronto Area. • Its population is just over 1.2 million, and growing rapidly • Only 19% of Dubai’s population was born in the UAE

  5. Tourism • Despite its relatively small size, Dubai has focused on becoming a major global tourist destination • The $1500-a-night Burj Al Arab Hotel is the world’s only 7 star hotel • Dubai hosts a European PGA golf tournament, and the subtropical city even boasts an indoor ski hill • Dubai is also currently building the largest airport in the world.

  6. Globalization Friendly • Dubai has focused on creating an attractive destination for travel, whether it be for business or pleasure. • It is officially and Islamic Emirate, but Dubai has made an effort to be tolerant towards the beliefs of non-Muslims. • Alcohol is served in hotels and restaurants, and temples and churches have been constructed for visitors who practice other religions…except for Judaism.

  7. Dubai as a Brand • To entice the global tourist and business community, Dubai has focused on marketing itself as being the best and biggest for many things. • Dubai has created human-made islands in the shape of palm trees, and one in the shape of a globe (albeit a slightly distorted projection) • The Burj Dubai is currently the tallest building in the world, having recently surpassed the CN Tower in height…unfortunately, it’s almost as empty as the CN Tower as well.

  8. Is this sustainable? • The massive growth experienced by Dubai is impressive, but many question if it can be sustained. • Very little concern has been shown towards environmental sustainability in the development of Dubai. • It is a city that heavily depends upon cheap energy and water, and a steady flow of money to pay for these resources. • The economic downturn has crippled much of Dubai’s expansion plans. The Burj Dubai, has been re-named The Burj Khalifa after an Abu Dhabi bailout was required to pay for much of the $1.5billion cost.

  9. Is it over? • Some people are suggesting that Dubai’s brief stint as a global economic powerhouse is rapidly coming to an end. • Even the Dubai World Islands appear to be stalled and perhaps even disappearing!
