  3. What is Globalization? • People and countries have always shared goods, services, knowledge and cultures. • However, in recent years people have enhanced technology and the barriers between people have lessened. • This means that we are able to share these things much faster.

  4. What is Globalization? • Globalization provides opportunities and challenges. • Bigger markets can mean bigger profits. • This leads to greater wealth for investing in development and reducing poverty in many countries.

  5. What is Globalization? • There are many factors that can restrict a country's ability to take advantages of the changes. • These may include: weak domestic policies, institutions and infrastructure and trade barriers. • Each country makes decisions and policies that allows its citizens to get the best from globalization.

  6. The Debate • Globalization has many positive and negative effects on the economy, society, and politics. • The issues and perceived effects of globalization excite strong feelings, tempting people to regard it in terms of black and white, when in fact globalization is an extremely complex web of many things.

  7. The Debate • One view is that it has the potential to make societies richer through trade and to bring knowledge and information to people around the world. • Another view is that it contributes to the exploitation of the poor by the rich, and threatens traditional cultures with modernization. • Some link globalization to terrorism.

  8. A Balance • Globalization has both costs and benefits. • There have been examples of poorly managed globalization but there are also examples of well managed connections with the global community. • Globalization is a reality and so many countries are cooperating together to work out smart ways to manage globalization.
