  2. Future Tenses Tenses used to describe future are: • Simple Present • Present Continuous • Will future • Be going to future • Future Continuous • Future Perfect • Future Perfect Continuous

Future Tenses Simple Present • I do / she does (form) • We use present simple to talk about TIMETABLES, PROGRAMMES etc. (for public transportation, cinemas etc.) • My train leaves at 11:30, so I need to be at the station by 11:15. • What time does the film begin this evening • The train leaves at 9 pm. • Although the action takes place in the future, it takes place regularly and is set by a time table.

  4. Future Tenses Simple Present • You can use the simple present tense to talk about people if their plans are fixed like a timetable. (such as politicians, businessmen) • What time do you finish work tomorrow? • I start my new job on Monday • Compare the present use and future use of present simple: • The buses start at 6 a.m. and stop at 12 p.m. every day. (simple present) • The train to Ankara leaves at 9 a.m. tomorrow and arrives there at 6 p.m. (future) • Our classes usually begin at 9 and finish at 12. (simple present) • My class begins at 9 tomorrow and finishes at 12. (future)

  7. Future Tenses Present Continuous • I am doing something (tomorrow) = I have already decided and arranged to do it. • A: What are you doing on Saturday evening? B: I am going to the cinema • A: What time is Cathy arriving tomorrow? B: Half past ten. I am meeting her at the station. • I am not working tomorrow so we can go out somewhere. • Ian isn’t playing football next Saturday. He’s hurt his leg.

Future Tenses Present Continuous • Time expressions such as tomorrow, nextweek,next year, next summer are used with present continuous to express arranged future. • I'm meeting Ann next Saturday. • They are giving a party next month. • She is leaving Istanbul in two days. (İki gün sonra İstanbul'dan ayrılıyor. / İki gün sonra İstanbul'dan ayrılacak.)

  9. Future Tenses Present Continuous • Compare: • I'm going to the theatre tonight. • In the example you can see that the tickets are already bought. So we are talking about an arrangement for the near future. • The play starts at 8 o’clock. • The difference between Present simple and Present continuous can be seen in this example.

  16. Future Tenses be going to Future • Use of “be going to future” • I am going to do something = I have decided to do it. I intend to do it. • A: Are you going to watch the late film on TV tonight? B: No, I am going to have an early night. • A: I hear Sarah has won some money. What is she going to do with it? B: She is going to buy a new car. • I am going to make a quick phone call. Can you wait for me. • If we are talking about an action which has been decided or planned earlier, we use be going to. • A: Why have you bought this material? B: I'm going tomake a skirt for myself.

  17. Future Tenses be going to Future • Strong prediction: If we have proof that something will happen we use be going to. • The sky is black. It is going torain. • There is a lot of blossom on the trees this spring. We are going to have a good crop. • I feel terrible. I think I am going to be ill. • The economic situation is bad now and things are going to get worse.

  25. Future Tenses Will Future • Use of will future 1. We use will when we decide to do something at the time of speaking. • Oh! I’ve left the door open. I will go and shut it. • “What would you like to drink?” “I’ll have an orange juice,please” • “Did you phone Lucy?” “Oh, no. I forgot. I’ll phone her now.” • Present simple cannot be used in these situations. • I will go and shut the door. (not I go and shut) • “I don't have any money.” “Don't worry. I'll lend you some.”(Üzülme. Ben sana veririm.) • “Some guests are corning in two hours, and nothing is ready yet.” ”Don't worry. I'll wash the dishes and you can do the cooking.” (Ben bulaşıkları yıkarım, sen yemeği pişirirsin.)

  26. Future Tenses Will Future 2. Will is used in these situations: • Offering to do something • That bag looks heavy. I will help you with it. • Agreeing to do something • A: Can you give Tim this book? B: Sure, I will give it to him when I see him this afternoon. • Promising to do something • Thanks for lending me the money. I’ll pay you back on Friday. • Asking somebody to do something (Will you.....?) • Will you please turn the stereo down. I am trying to concentrate.

Future Tenses Will Future • Will is used to make predictions without proof. • There will be a rise in prices after the elections. • With will we use tomorrow, next week, next month, next summer, in two days (iki gün sonra), in ten minutes (on dakika sonra), two days from now (iki gün sonra), five years from now (beş yıl sonra), soon ( az sonra, yakında). • We will take an exam next week. • Tomorrow is a public holiday, so she won't go to work. • She will graduate in three years. • Two months from now, they will move into a new flat.

Future Tenses Will Future • Further notes: • With " I" and "we“ we can use "shall" instead of "will". • We will/shall invite them to the party. • I will/shall help you with your homework. • Short form for "will not" and "shall not" are "won't" and "shan't“. • They will not/won't come tomorrow. • We shall not/shan't go to the party.

  42. Future Tenses Future Continuous • USE OF THE FUTURE CONTINUOUS TENSE a) We use this tense to express an action which will be in proggress at a certain time in the future. (Bu tense'i, gelecekte bir noktada yapıyor olacağımız eylemleri ifade etmek için kullanırız.) • Don't call me tomorrow between ten and eleven I'll be having an interview then. • This time next year, you'll probably be attending university. • My plane departs at nine tomorrow, so I'll be flying to New York at this hour tomorrow. • b) We can also use this tense to request something from someone. (Bu tense'i birinden bir şey rica ederken de kullanabiliriz.) • "Will you be going past the post office when you go out?“'Yes. Why?" "If so, can you post this letter for me?" • "Will you be using your bike tomorrow?“ "No, I don't think so.“"If not, can you lend it to me for the afternoon?"

(Gelecekte bir noktada yapmış, tamamlamış olacağımız eylemleri bu tense ile ifade ederiz. ) • By, before, in a week (or in a week's time), in ten days (or in ten days' time), in three years (or in three years' time) are used with this tense • She will have graduated from university in two years. • She promises that she will have finished her report by tomorrow. • They will have completed the new school building by next year.

Future Tenses Future Perfect Tense • "By the time", "when" ve "before", bu tense ile sık kullanılan zaman bağlaçlarıdır. • I will have finished my homework by the time mother comes back. • Before this term is finished, you will have learnt most of the English grammar. • The children will have gone to bed when the guests arrive. • We will already have eaten dinner when he comes. O geldiğinde biz yemeğimizi yemiş olacağız. • *** "by" ile "by the time" arasındaki farka dikkat ediniz. "By" bir preposition olduğu için kendinden sonra bir isim gelir, (by two o'clock, by next month, by tomorrow, by then, etc.) "By the time" ise bir bağlaçtır. Kendinden sonra bir cümle gelir. • l will have finished my work by 5 o'clock. • I will have finished my work by the time you come back. • I'll call you at 2.00. I hope you'll have finished your work by then. • I'll call you at 2.00. I hope you'll have finished your work by the time I call you.
