  2. Problem • We feel that the computer labs at Eastern Michigan University do not fully accommodate the needs of our students. • Printing Issues • Availability • Technology Issues • Staff

  3. Printing Issues • When printing in the computer labs several issues can come about • The Printer can be out of order which means that no one is going to be printing anything. • The printer can be backed up which will cause you to wait for long periods of time and possibly be late for class. • You may be at your limit for paper printing. • The Limit for paper printing at EMU is 300 pages. Its not enough that we have to deal with constant increase in tuition but now we are also required to pay for the paper we use.

  4. Availability • In the computer labs it can be very difficult to find a computer to work on especially in Prey Harold and the Student Center. • When we surveyed students they said they have had to wait anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes for a computer even if they are just looking to print out a page or two for class work.

  5. Availability • Another large problem being faced is that not all students in the computer labs are working on school work. A majority of the students are either on facebook, myspace, or other online entertainment sources. • When a student is going to the computer lab to work on school work it is very frustrating to walk in and see no computers available, yet every screen is covered with entertainment sites.

  6. Technology Issues • We all know what a pain computers can be, but it is even more disappointing to find that the lab computers are down as soon as you need to print something out for a class or complete an assignment Although this is an issue that is difficult to avoid we feel that having a more knowledgeable staff in the labs would help with this problem. • It may come to a surprise to some of you that the people who run the computer labs are not computer geniuses.

  7. Staff • Although the staff members in the computer labs are very nice they are sometimes not as helpful. • Most of the lab workers are not computer science majors as you may suspect butusually English or math majors, and though they are very smart most of the time computers are not their strong point. • Many times in the labs things go wrong with the computers and it would be helpful to have a technician in the labs.

  8. Interview/Focus Group • When interviewing and working with a focus group I got a lot of the same results. • When asked if they would like to see people who are on facebook and myspace kicked off the computer for those who are going to be working on school work they replied that that would be a reasonable option to making the labs more accessible. • Also discussed was the paper limit for printing. These students felt that although this has yet to affect them, it probably will in the second semester. • Technical problems were also brought up and also the lack of knowledge of the staff, but all in all they thought a new or bigger lab would be sufficient.

  9. Suggestions • Many suggestions were made by our focus groups and interviews that we as a group agreed with. • Limit computer time • Have a Printing only lab • Making classroom labs assessable during non class times.
