Matter We are going to create a foldable to help us better remember some of the items we have discussed so far.
Step # 1 • Every student needs two sheets of paper. • Now follow the instructions of the teacher to fold the paper accordingly and staple at the fold with two staples.
Step # 2Copy the label onto your foldable. Matter (any substance that has mass and takes up space) 3 States of matter Solid, liquid, gas Elements Compounds Mixtures
Step # 3Flip the first page up. The page the wrote matter on. Matter (any substance that has mass and takes up space) Elements Compounds Mixtures
Step # 4 • Element- a substance that cannot be broken down into any other substance by chemical or physical mean. • A list of elements found on the Periodic Table of Elements • Represented by one letter or two letter symbol • O (oxygen) • H (hydrogen) • Fe (iron) Elements Compounds Mixtures
Step # 5 Compound- two or more elements combined chemically in a set ratio ex. H2O two parts Hydrogen and one part oxygen when bound together, it makes a totally new substance. More examples: NaCl is table salt, 1 sodium + 1 Chlorine Formula- shows the ratio of elements in the compound example H2O Properties of a compound can be very different from properties of its elements. Sugar is made from Hydrogen (gas), Oxygen (gas), and Carbon (black solid that makes pencil lead), which are totally different from white, sweet sugar. Compounds Mixtures
Step # 6 • Mixture- two or more substances in the same place that are not chemically combined. • Elements or compounds can be mixed together so that it is hard to tell them apart. • However, each substance in a mixture maintains its own properties. • Example- milk is mostly water, but the other substance in milk gives it, its nutritional value.
