  2. Some properties of matter include hardness, texture, shape, temperature, flammability, size and color. Can matter change properties?

  8. When can matter change its state? Matter can change its state whenever thermal energy is added or taken away.

  10. Evaporation Vaporization that takes place only on a liquid’s surface.

  11. Melting When thermal energy is added to a substance its particles vibrate faster until they break free from each other and the solid becomes a liquid.

  12. Melting Point Each substance melts at its own temperature called its melting point.

  13. Freezing When thermal energy is removed from a substance its particles slow down and the liquid changes to a solid.

  14. Vaporization A liquid gains enough thermal energy to become a gas.

  15. Boiling When vaporization takes place throughout a liquid.

  16. Chemical changes occur when substances combine or break apart to form new substances. Example: Heating table sugar until it turns to caramel; burning wood until it turns into ash.

  19. Measuring Matter The temperature at which a liquid boils is called its boiling point. The temperature at which a solid melts is called its melting point.

  20. The mass of an object measures how much matter the object contains. The weight of an object is a measure of the force of gravity on the object.
