  1. BCNSA Winter Meet and GreetNSERC Information

  2. NSERC – What is that?? • Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada • NSERC will help make Canada a country of discoverers and innovators for the benefit of all Canadians. • They will do this through FUNDING research

  3. Funding – How much?? • Amount: $4500 provided by the University to be matched by a minimum of $1125 by the professor. Any supplement above this level may be set at the professor’s discretion. • So, you will earn a minimum of $5,625.

  4. NSERC – What kind of Commitment?? • A summer NSERC USRA (Undergraduate Student Research Award) is a 16 week commitment. • Scheduling for times worked is determined by the professor, though usually it is 9am-5pm Monday through Friday.

  5. NSERC – What will I be Doing?? • The duties are laid out by the professor you work with, though usually this will involve preparation or actual work towards your 4th year Honours thesis. • At the very least you will gain invaluable experience working in a laboratory environment. • An NSERC is also quite impressive to add to a CV.

  6. NSERC – How Do I Apply?? • Find a professor you’d like to work with who is able/willing to accept summer NSERC students….stay tuned for a list of BCN Faculty you could work with… • Go to the Website: • http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/ • OR, simply Google NSERC • This award is based on marks, usually around a 10.5 cumulative average is required

BCN Faculty Accepting Summer NSERC Students: • Biology: • Dr. Corkum  Behavioural Ecology (fish) • Dr. Higgs  Sensory Biology • Dr. Mennill  Behavioural Ecology (birds) • Dr. Wahlsten  Behavioural Genetics • Dr. Zielinski  Olfaction in Fish • Psychology: • Dr. Cohen  Animal Cognition • Dr. Scoboria (possibly)  Adult Clinical

  8. Deadline!! • The internal Biology Deadline for Summer NSERC applications is January 30th. • Submit completed forms to Nancy in the Biology Office. • Remember, you have to give the professor enough time to fill out their part of the application, so START EARLY!
