  2. Space exploration Space exploration is the discovery and exploration ofouter space by means of space technology. Physical exploration of space is conducted both by human spaceflights and by robotic spacecraft.

  3. What was the space race? • The Space Race was a long-lasting competition between the United States and the Soviet Union between the years of 1957 to 1975. It began with the delivery of the first artificial satellite, Sputnik, into orbit in October 1957.

  8. What was the first artificial satellite? • The first artificial satellite was Sputnik 1. It was the size of a basketball and was made by the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) or Russia. It was launched on October 4, 1957. The Soviets beat the first US satellite, Explorer 1, by four months. The main designers and developers of Sputnik 1 were M.S.Khomyakov, M.V.Krayushkin, S. Lidorenko and O. G. Ivanovsky.
