  1. OMMS Media Center The Stuff You Need to Know!

  2. Who Are the Librarians? • Mrs. Piper-Hammack – Library Media Specialist • Mr. Stone – Library Media Specialist Remember our names! We do not respond to “Library Person”, “Bookkeeper” or “Hey You”. 

When is the Media Center Open? • Morning Study Hall (7:20 am – 7:45 am) • This is a NO TALK time! • Students will be given the boot if you talk! • During the day with a class or with a Media Center Pass • No pass, go back to class! • Cannot use Hall pass, must be MC pass (MC = Media Center) • Always sign in and out on the notebook at the student door • During class changes • But we won’t give late passes!

  4. What Can I Check Out? • Total of 3 items at one time • Only check out what you will read • Books – Fiction, nonfiction, biography, graphic novels • Playaways – Audio books on mp3 player • Reference Books – Overnight only! • Laptops – Can only be used in the Media Center!

  5. Due Dates and Fines • Most items are checked out for 3 weeks • Stamp a due date card and put in back of book • Fines for most overdue items - $0.10 per day • Reference Books - $1.00 Fine each day • Overdue notices sent to Lit. teachers every other Wednesday • To pay your fines, you MUST turn in or renew your books first • You cannot check out if you have an overdue book OR owe fines more than $0.50 • Always sign the fine book when you pay a fine

  6. What If I Lose Something? • Don’t freak out – it happens, but you do have to pay for it • Let us know ASAP • Don’t make a habit of losing books – take care of them! • Hardback fiction, biography, and graphic novels cost $20.00 • Paperback books cost $10.00 • Hardback nonfiction and reference books cost $20.00 and up (Can be expensive!) • Playaways cost $50.00! – Yikes! • Don’t lose a Playaway!!! • Books on tape can cost up to $85.00 – Double Yikes!

Printing and Copies • DON’T PRINT WITHOUT PERMISSION! • Printing and Copies - $0.10 per page for Black/White, $0.50 per page for color • Don’t waste paper and ink • Copy and paste from Internet to Word • Use Print Preview – only print pages you need • Don’t click Print Icon – Use File, Print, and select the correct printer • Only select the color printer if required by teacher • Did we mention – DON’T PRINT WITHOUT PERMISSION!!!

This is Your DESTINY! • Use Destiny Quest to find books in our MC • Destiny Quest is an online catalog • Access Destiny Quest from Apps folder or from Media Center web site • Destiny Quest also allows you to put books on hold and write reviews • You must log in to Destiny Quest for these functions • To renew a book (check it out again), bring the book to the circulation desk • Renewing books allows you to avoid fines! • Renew your books if they are due and you are still reading them

The MC is a HOT SPOT! • 13 Desktops • 3 stay logged in for AR and Destiny Quest • Always LOG OFF the other 10 when you finish using a desktop • 20 Laptops (wireless, portable computers) • Always completely SHUT DOWN when you finish using a laptop • Wait for all lights to go off before closing lid • Laptops should be used at a table and cannot leave the Media Center • Can only use laptops with a class • Computers are used for school assignments only – no games

Computer Login • Memorize your login • Username: Grade (starts with 0), last name, first initial, middle initial • EX: 08dodsonpt • Password: Five digit STI #, capital A, lowercase l, question mark • EX: 12345Al? • The Al stands for Alabama • For a question mark, must press Shift Key • Don’t tell anyone your username and password

  11. Media Center Web Site • Media Center web site allows you to search Google, Nettrekker, AVL, Destiny Quest and more! • To get there: • From School go to the Applications folder, Student Apps, OMMS Media Center • From Home, go to Google, Type in OMMS Media

Computer Lab Rules (B11/G10) • No games on the computers – no exceptions! • The chairs are not toys – only raise or lower if truly needed • No food, drink, candy or gum • Please clean up when you leave – do not leave paper on table or floor • Log off computers before leaving • Shut down computers at the end of the day

Do you know BOB? • BOB is Battle of the Books • You can attend the interest meeting in September • Read these six books: • The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins • Gone by Michael Grant • Scat by Carl Hiaasen • The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman • Sucks to Be Me by Kimberly Pauley • Sure Fire by Jack Higgins • Try out for BOB team in December • Compete at County BOB tournament in April • Reading these books may count as your outside reading in your literature class (check with your teacher)

Think you know the Media Center? • When you’re ready, go back to the Media Center Homepage and click on Quiz • Use the clickers to put in your answers to the questions • Answer all 20 questions • When you are finished Logoff of the laptop • Then check out books • And don’t forget our names! (Hammack and Stone)
