  5. Context of the project • Canada is to a large extent an English speaking country • The French speaking population is significant, particularly in Québec, which is about 85% French speaking • French is the official language in Québec • Counts for about 23% of the Canada

  6. Objectives of the project • To have some important technical and non technical documentation available (mainly) in French • To help retain and even increase the IEEE membership • With documentation and written material in the vernacular language

  7. Starting point • Set up May 1997 - ECC meeting • Find out the needs of IEEE Canada members • Find a reliable professional translator • Began with short translations • Thereafter articles published in Canadian Review where translated

  9. Committee formed in 1998 • To define the orientations of the project • Members called upon from time to time to translate short texts • In 1999, enlarged it was enlarged to the three councils of the Region-7 (East, Center and West) • Regional Activities Project

  10. Documents published • About IEEE, bylaws and charters • Brochures for employers to support IEEE • Biographies • Awards and Recognition certificates • Some articles of IEEE Canadian Review • A glossary of terms (web)

  11. Important : Acceptance • The translation project has become increasingly accepted by the various groups involved • Very good support to move ahead from the Region 7 board • The collaboration of the director of Region 7 (Dave KEMP) has also helped to move forward
