  2. Childhood Not much is known about childhood Born 1664, supposedly in Stamford CT. Much speculation about records and past Nothing was definite

  3. Family life • Madden name was Pennoyer • Married in 1680 to Henry Rich • Widowed by him, moved to Salem and lived with the Clifford Family • Married Giles Corey in 1690

  4. Family life cont. • Thought to maybe of had a mulatto child • A child of darker skin, not 100% white • Could be the reason disliked by many in Salem • Might not have been hers, could have been an Native American she took in

  5. Societies Views Known to be very religious Respected member of Puritan society Generally disliked by her neighbors Reputation for being out spoken, sarcastic and blunt

  6. Education • Not highly educated • Like most woman in this time, she dealt with the house and the family • Not much was actually stated about her education

  7. Career • No records of a career • Like education, she might not have had one • Not uncommon at this time for woman to be in the home, no career

  8. Religious practices Member of the Puritan Community Was known as the “Gospel Women” Up until her death she was a member of the Village Church Participation and faith were genuine

  9. Accusations Accused by Elizabeth Paris and Abigail Williams

  10. Witch Trials Begin • Accused March 11, 1692 • Rev. Parris asked the girls to name another witch • Claimed Martha Corey was one • Delegation was sent to clear up what they thought would be a misunderstanding • Responded sarcastically, creating the assumption she was guilty • A warrant was sent for arrest • Sent to Boston Jail

  11. Martha’s Trial Many came to testify against her Her own husband, also accused, testified against her During the trial, many “bewitched” girls were there Whatever Martha did, the girls mocked her claiming Martha was making them do it

  12. The endBoth Martha and her husband Giles suffered and died by the end of the witch hysteria Martha was hanged September 22, 1692 Giles was pressed to death September 19, 1692
