  2. Compound Words • A compound word is formed from two smaller words. • The meaning of the compound word is often the combined meanings of the two smaller words. bathrobe Decode these compound words. rosebud, campfire, toothbrush, sunlight, bookstore

  3. Contractions • A contraction is a shortened form of two words. • An apostrophe takes the place of one or more missing letters. ‘stakes the place of is n’ttakes the place ofnot ‘retakes the place ofare ‘lltakes the place ofwill

  10. Author’s Viewpoint • Author’s viewpoint is how the author feels about a subject. • This can help us understand why an author has written a selection. • Read page 270 • Based on this passage what is the authors viewpoint?

Categorize and Classify • To categorize means to give a name to a group or set of items that are alike in some way. • To classify means to put items into groups based on something they share in common. apron, boots, cake, challah, chicken, chicken soup, dress, grape juice, nightdress, overcoat, raisins, suit clothing foods

Guide Words • Dictionary entries are listed in alphabetical order. • Guide words appear at the top of a dictionary page. • The first guide word at the top of the page shows the first entry word and the second guide word shows the last entry word on the page. • Work in pairs on the “Dictionary Work” page.

  16. Plurals • A plural noun names more than one person, place, or thing. • Most plurals are formed by adding s or es to a word. • For nouns ending in ch, sh, x, or s, the plural is formed by adding an es.

  18. Word Families • A word family is a group of words sharing a common base word. • Words in a family often look and sound alike. • Recognizing words that belong to a family improves vocabulary. reuse useful

  23. Rhyming Words • Rhyming words have the same ending sound. • Rhyming words can have different ending letters, such as in calf and laugh puddle, pudding, muddle, pumpkin

Dictionary Definitions • Dictionary definitions come after the entry word. • Definitions used most often are listed first. great (grāt) adj. 1. big or large in size. 2. large in number. 3. important. • In your group find the word trunk in the dictionary, and read the definitions. Write a sentence for each definition of trunk.
