The Cold War • Not only will the U.S. keep Communism in a container, but the U.S. will also help countries around the world resist Communism – This is known as the Truman Doctrine • Truman arranged for $400 million to be sent to Turkey and Greece so that Communism would not spread President Truman

  4. Truman Doctrine The Truman Doctrine in March 1947 promised that the USA “would support free peoples who are resisting” communism. This led to containment – policy of containing communism where it is.

  5. Truman Doctrine • Greece and Turkey were undergoing post-World War II political and economic upheaval • USSR wants to extend influence into these areas • Under policy of containment, USA cannot let this happen

Truman asks Congress for $400 million in aid for Turkey & Greece in 1947 • Hoping pumping money into their economies would prevent the turn to communism • By 1950, US gave over $660 million to Greece and Turkey • Truman doctrine represents further movement away from neutrality

  7. Containment • The U.S. decided the best way to confront the U.S.S.R. was to limit their influence • Containment became the official policy of the U.S. from 1946 to the present • Think of trying to keep Communism in a container

Marshall Plan • The Marshall Plan tried to prevent this • The Marshall Plan gave European countries more than 13 billion dollars over a four year period • Europe was able to feed her people, rebuild her cities, and avoid Communism • The U.S. got an enormous amount of business, a Democratic Europe, and status as a World Power

  10. The Soviet Union and Eastern European countries were invited to be helped with the Marshall Plan but they refused • Why?
