Types of Colonies Royal Colonies a colony ruled or administered by officials appointed by and responsible to the reigning sovereign of the parent state such as New York. Charter Colonies a colony, as Virginia, Massachusetts, Connecticut, or Rhode Island, chartered to an individual, trading company, etc., by the British crown. Proprietary Colonies any of certain colonies, as Maryland and Pennsylvania, that were granted to an individual or group by the British crown and that were granted full rights of self-government.
