  1. Assistive Technology This Power point presentation was created by : Elyse W. Scott ED 505 Technology and Education Fall One 2014

  2. Assistive Technology • Assistive Technology are devices that are used as a service to help aide students with disabilities to improve and or help maintain functional performance in the classroom.

  3. Federal Law • Federal law requires that assistive technology be a considering factor when developing an IEP (Individual Education Plan).

  4. Things to consider When considering using Assistive technology for a student the IEP team needs to: 1. Identify the Problem 2. Come up with assistive technology that could benefit the student.

  5. Other things to consider 1. Is the Assistive technology working properly? 2. Is there more training that is needed on how to better use the device? 3. How can the student learn how to use the device? Will the student be comfortable with the device? 4. Teachers also need to identify new devices as they arise.

  6. Examples Examples of assistive technology and how they aid a student to help them reach the desired learning outcomes for the following disabilities: Hearing impaired Learning disabled Seeing impaired Physically disabled

  7. Hearing impaired • An FM system is a wireless, portable, battery-operated device that uses radio transmission to send auditory signals.    The teacher wears a microphone connected to a transmitter that is attached to the student’s body.   The student either wears the receiver clipped to their clothing ,hearing aid, induction loop system or audio input cables.   An FM system's range is about 30 feet to more than 200 feet depending on the power of the arena or classroom.    • If you need assist an audiologist can assist with selecting and fitting the correct FM system for you and your student.

  8. Seeing impaired • Textbooks on tape can be used to aide students that are visually impaired. Textbooks on tape can enable students that can not see the pages in a textbook to hear the words that are being read.

  9. Learning disabled • Graphic organizing software can be used for a student that is learning disabled. Students that are learning disabled can use graphic organizing software to create charts and graphs to demonstrate classroom learning material.

  10. Physically disabled • Foot pedals or hardware switches assist students that are physically disabled in operating a technology device. • This device can be used to aide students that are physically disabled by aiding them to maneuver a computer without the use of a computer mouse.
