SUICIDE

SUICIDE. SUICIDE is the wilful taking of ones own life; the act of self-murder. The word suicide is not found in the Bible. It comes from the Latin “SUI” meaning of oneself and “ CIDA” meaning to kill. Suicide is arguably an act of selfishness, spitefulness and/or retaliation.

  2. SUICIDE is the wilful taking of ones own life; the act of self-murder. The word suicide is not found in the Bible. It comes from the Latin “SUI” meaning of oneself and “CIDA” meaning to kill. Suicide is arguably an act of selfishness, spitefulness and/or retaliation

  3. FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH SUICIDE • - Mental disorders • Suffering / physical illness • Rejection or neglect • Stress • Relationship problems • Grief / traumatic event • To escape punishment or abusive environment • Guilt or shame • Catastrophic injury

  4. FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH SUICIDE • - Economic crisis / financial loss • Self sacrifice • Military / social strategy (suicide attacks) • Loneliness • Religious or cult related • Curiosity about the after-life • Fear of aging

  5. SIGNS OF A SUICIDAL PERSON PHYSICAL SIGNS: - Sleeplessness or excessive sleeping - Loss of appetite or excessive eating - Unexplained crying - Hormonal changes

  6. SIGNS OF A SUICIDAL PERSON MENTAL / EMOTIONAL SIGNS: - Withdrawal - Easily discouraged or depressed - Deep anger or remorse - Expressed guilt - Personality / behavior changes - Feelings of hopelessness, helplessness or worthlessness

  7. SIGNS OF A SUICIDAL PERSON ACTIVITY SIGNS: - Outright suicide threats - Termination behaviors (finalizing will, giving away possessions, saying goodbye) - Decline in performance (job, school, hobbies) - Negative statements (“everyone would be better off without me”)

BIBLICAL SUICIDE VICTIMS • ABIMELECH  Judges 9:52-54 (Assisted suicide): He was seriously wounded by a woman & requested his armourbearer to kill him rather than die at the hand of a woman. • SAMSON  Judges 17:25-30: He died for a cause he believed in and also revenge • SAUL  1 Sam. 31:1-4: He was injured & rather than be abused & killed by his enemies; took his own life

BIBLICAL SUICIDE VICTIMS • SAUL’S ARMOURBEARER  1 Sam. 31:5: He followed in Saul’s footsteps by taking his life • ZIMRI  1 Kings 16:18: He realized his kingdom was conquered & burnt his palace while in it • AHITHOPHEL  2 Sam. 17:23: His advice was rejected so he went home & hanged himself • JUDAS  Matt. 27:3-5: Burdened with guilt & remorse, he also hanged himself

  11. BIBLICAL APPLICATIONS TO SUICIDE •  Suicide is not the unpardonable sin! Scripture does not tell us that! (Matt. 12:31-32) •  Suicide is not explicitly condemned in the Bible, but that does not mean God condones it • The examples in scripture were living outside of God’s will at the time of their suicide  Suicide displays failure to live by faith and lack of hope in God

  12. BIBLICAL APPLICATIONS TO SUICIDE  Death & destruction are the works of Satan (John 10:10, 8:44)  God gives life & hope and desires a good future for you (Jer. 29:11)  The giving and taking of life belongs to God (1 Sam. 2:6-8, Job 7:1, 14:5-6)

  13. HELPING SUICIDAL PERSONS Studies consistently show that suicidal persons do not appear to have greater life stress than others; they just lack effective strategies to cope with their situation. GIVE HELP!

  14. HELPING SUICIDAL PERSONS - Give them hope: positive reasons & the will to live - Offer your friendship, love & acceptance of them - Emphasize their self-worth, identity, personal dignity & sanctity of life - Allow them to communicate & express their feelings without judgment - Highlight the positive aspects of their life - Remove lethal weapons such as pills, drugs or guns - Involve professional help such as a counselor or pastor
