n_TOF Facility: Experimental Area 2 ( EAR2) E.Chiaveri/ CERN EN-STI-EET EAR2 Meeting 15 September 2011
ITEMS to be discussed EAR2 Meeting 15 September 2011 • Civil Engineering • Radiation Protection • Access • Planning • Budget • Staff • Safety • Next Meeting
NewExperimentalArea (EAR-2) EAR2 ~ 20 m 10 m n_TOF target EAR-1 (at 185 m) Flight-path length : ~20 m at 90° respect to p-beam direction expected neutron flux enhancement drastic reduction of the t0 flash EAR2 Meeting 15 September 2011
Comparison Neutron Fluence EAR1/EAR2 EAR2 Meeting 15 September 2011
Neutron Fluence Comparison to EAR1 Reference for EAR1 : FLUKA Simulations with fission collimator (d = 8 cm) FLUKA Simulation for EAR2
n_TOF barracks TOTEM barracks to be relocated EAR2 Meeting 15 September 2011
FLUKA geometry • 3 D model of the bunker • No penetration (ventilation, detectors or other utilities) ? • Dump 4 cm iron + poly + cadmium + concrete (can be further optimized)
Source term • Neutron spectrum from Christina and Marco (integral = 1.06E07 neutron/cm-2) • Source routine to sample from the energy distribution (normalization to 1 primary…) • Normalization for prompt dose rate calculations : = 1.06x1007 x p x 13/2 x 13/2 x 4 x 1.2 / 16.8 4.02E08 neutrons/s entering the area
Prompt dose rate • Two scenarios : • Full beam goes to the dump (thin samples….) • Thick target inside the bunker scatters the incoming neutrons (detectors, samples for irradiation, flanges….) • Scoring prompt dose rate outside the bunker
What is next ? • Study with updated neutron spectrum (better statistic) and photon spectrum • Define shielding requirements • Integration in ISR area ? Shielding issues ? • Tech. gallery radiation streaming to ISR public area • Integration of requirements for unsealed source handling • Documentation
DRAFT EAR-2 MAD PAD EAR2 Meeting 15 September 2011
Requirements for EAR2 • The Experimental Area on surface must be Work Sector Type A (WSTA) The main requirements with proposed main Actor are: • Drilling of the shaft on top of the Target (~10m) GS • Building on surface (WSTA conditions) GS+DGS/RP • Vertical beam dump (reduced neutron albedo) EN/STI +DGS/RP • Monitored and filtered ventilation (WSTA conditions) EN/CV + DGS/RP • Changing room/Material Entrance (WSTA Conditions)EN/MEF • Monitoring: dose rate, aerosol concentration, hand-foot monitor, portable monitor DGS/RP • Controlled Access integrated in the new PS complex Access System upgrade GS/ASE List not exhaustive. EAR2 Meeting 15 September 2011
Cost estimation for EAR2 • Dismantling barrack 559 • Drilling of the shaft on top of the Target • Construction of the Laboratory (~64m2 WSTA) • Vertical beam dump • Cooling & Ventilation • RP Monitoring • General Services • Contingency List not exhaustive EAR2 Meeting 15 September 2011
Road map • A draft document has been presented to INTC July meeting. • In September/October a final draft including budget, • planning and personnel • A final document will be presented at the end of 2011 • to the Collaboration board • February 2012 final document will be presented to the INTC meeting • March Research Board for final approval EAR2 Meeting 15 September 2011
