  2. Jews • What happened? • Who was involved? • How does this event show religious disunity in Europe?

What happened? • Catholics and protestants viewed Jews and Muslims as heretics. • In 1492 Jews were forced to convert to Catholic Christianity, otherwise they’d have to leave their homes in Spain. • Many families resettled in eastern and southern Europe. • Jews who converted earlier, or were members of the educated elite stayed living in Spain. • Places where Jews were allowed to stay were not as restricted as they were in the middle ages. • But in some places they were forced to live in a certain area, called a ghetto.

Who was involved? • Protestants- wanted Jews to convert to Christianity. • Christians- wanted the majority of Europe to follow the Christian lifestyle • Luther- Wanted Jews to convert to Christianity along with the protestants and Christians • Jews- either had to convert to Christianity or be forced out of Europe

  5. How does this show religious disunity in Europe? • This event showed disunity because Catholics and protestants wanted the Jews to convert to Christianity otherwise they would be pushed out of Europe.

  7. What Happened? • The catholic and Protestant communities treated Muslims as heretics • Heretics were people who go against the belief of the church • Muslims were forced to either convert or leave Spain in the 1500s

  8. Who was involved? • The catholic and protestant communities were the main prosecutors of the Muslims • Martin Luther was one of the People who strongly disliked Muslims and wished for them to be prosecuted

  9. How did this show disunity? • This event showed disunity because the Muslims who didn’t convert were kicked out of Spain which left most of Spain Catholic
