  4. Aims of the evaluation project • Collate data • Analyse data • Make recommendations for future user/carer involvement

  5. Literature review - user/carer involvement • Paradigm shift in 1990s (Edwards, 2000) • Levels of involvement (Goss & Miller, 1995) • Representativeness (Hopton, 1997; Forrest et al, 2000) • Best practice (Goss & Miller, 1995; Service First, 1999)

  6. Methods • Non-participant observation • Semi-structured interviews • Documentary analysis

  7. (1) Non-participant observation • Observed 5 steering group meetings • Used sociograms to record group dynamics • Meeting minutes supported observations

  8. (2) Interviews • Interview role-play with volunteers • Interviewed steering group members • users & carers (n=13) • managers (n=4)

  9. (3) Documentary analysis • Subscribed to ‘communication loop’ • Analysed all steering group correspondence

  10. Results • 4 principle themes: • Membership • Meeting style • Sharing perception • Having a voice

  11. (1) Membership • Minimal initial uptake • Purposive recruitment • ‘Open’ membership • Risk of unrepresentative sample
