The features of living things There are many living things out there in the world even if you don’t know that they’re there. There are 7 characteristics of living things and they are: feeding, movement, breathing, excretion, growth, sensitivity and reproduction.
Feeding • Every single living organism need to take in substances from the environment to obtain their energy, grow and stay healthy.
Movement • All living organisms move in one way or another they all have internal movement (they have the ability to move substances from one part of the body to another). Some living organisms show exterior movements as an added bonus. Exterior movements are things like swimming, walking or flying.
Breathing • All living organisms breathe out gases that they exchange with the gases that non living organisms secrete.
Excretion • All living organisms extract waste from their bodies because if the waste was left in the body it could become deadly. We also secrete waste by breathing out carbon dioxide which plants breath in and vice versa the plant secretes/ breathes out oxygen which I the gas that us as living organisms need to breathe
Growth • When living things consume food we gain energy and some of that energy is used to help us grow. Living thing become bigger and stronger as they grow and then when they get old they start to become weak again. Can you imagine what life would be like if none of us grew up? Life would be hard.
Sensitivity • Living organisms react to changes around them like how we flinch if we touch boiling water. Sensitivity makes us use our five senses. For example is you smell rotten eggs your nose burns with the smell and if you eat something disgusting you automatically want to spit it out. And that’s all thanks to sensitivity.
Reproduction • All living things produce young. Cats have kittens, dogs have puppies, birds lay eggs and frogs lay eggs that turn into tadpoles. Plants also reproduce by dropping their seeds onto the ground.
