  1. Plants Basics Survival, Reproduction & Defense

  2. Essential Standards • 6.L.1 Understand the structures, processes and behaviors of plants that enable them to survive and reproduce.

  3. Clarifying Objectives • 6.L.1.1Summarize the basic structures and functions of flowering plants required for survival, reproduction and defense.

  4. Essential Questions • How are plants built? (What is it’s structure) • How do plants use their parts for DEFENSE? • How do plants use their parts for SURVIVAL? • How do plants use their parts of REPRODUCTION?

  5. Plants Structures • Plant STRUCTRUES are how the plants are built • Each plant part has a different responsibility to protect, help the plant survive or help it reproduce • The basic parts of a plant are • Roots • Stem • Leaves • Flower

  6. Essential Questions • Get with a partner and answer… • How are plants built? (What is it’s structure)

  7. Structures (Parts of the Plant) for Defense • Plants have structures for defense that protect themselves from being eaten or drying out • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veMvxMGHZzo • These defenses have devolved over time (thousands of years) to help the plant not get eaten • Thorns- Protect plants from being eaten by animals • Poisons- some plants release poison so when animals eat them they die • Thigmotropism- this is when leaves close when they are touched

  8. Natural Plant Defense • Thigmotropism- When the leaves of a plant close when you touch it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHoxl_6N_x4 • Poison- Some plants release poison when the plant is eaten which kills the animals that eat it • Thorns- Some plants have prickly thorns so animals can’t eat the plant

  9. Essential Questions • Get with a partner and answer… • How do plants use their parts for DEFENSE?

  10. Structures (Parts of the Plant) for Survival • Plants have structures (Parts of the plant) that enable them to survive in their specific habitat or Biome • Leaves • Stems • Roots

  11. Structures (Parts of the Plant) for Survival {Leaves} • Leaves are where photosynthesis, respiration & transpiration takes place which are necessary to the plants survival • PHOTOSYNTHESIS makes FOOD & ENERGY for the plants

  12. Structures (Parts of the Plant) for Survival {Stem} • Stems of the plant • Hold the plant up • Store some of the extra food & energy made during photosynthesis • Contains the Xylem which transports water to the whole plant • Contains the Phloem which transports food (glucose) to the rest of the plant

  13. Structures (Parts of the Plant) for Survival {Roots} • Roots are necessary to the plants survival for several reasons • Anchor the plant to the ground • Absorb the groundwater

  14. Essential Questions • Get with a partner and answer… • How do plants use their parts for SURVIVAL?

  15. Structures (Parts of the Plant) for Reproduction {Flower} • Reproduction to create more plants happens in the flower of the plant • The flower contains the male structure & female structure along with the seed

  16. Flower (Male) • The male part of the flower is called the Stamen • The stamen contains two parts called • Filament • Anther • The Anther produces the pollen which contains the SPERM

  17. Flower (Female) • The Female part of the plant is called the Pistil • The Pistil is made from 4 parts • Stigma • Style • Ovary • Ovule

  18. Essential Questions • Get with a partner and answer… • How do plants use their parts of REPRODUCTION?

  19. Important Points • Plants have structures for three reasons • Provide DEFENSE • Carry out processes for SURVIVAL • REPRODUCTION • Leaves, Roots, Stem carryout SURVIVAL processes for the plant • Flower helps plant REPRODUCE • Plant DEFENSE includes • Thorns • Thigmotropism • Poisons
