  1. Disease Any impaired function of the body with a characteristic set of symptoms Application: Human biological risk

  2. Distribution Areas of the world in which a species live Application: Evolution shapes ecological niches and determines species distributions

  3. Disturbance An event, caused by a physical, chemical, or biological agents, resulting in changes in population size or community composition Application: Ecosystem ecologists are often interested in how disturbances affect the flow of energy and matter through an ecosystem

  4. Divergent Plate Boundary An area beneath the ocean where tectonic plates move away from each other Application: Attributed to the cause of seafloor spreading, which creates new lithosphere and brings important elements to the surface of Earth.

  5. DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) A nucleic acid, the genetic material that contains the code for reproducing the components of the next generation, and which organisms pass off into their offspring Application: Organic compound found in all living things. Without it we would not exist.

  6. Dose-Response Study A study that exposes organisms to different amounts of a chemical and then observes a variety of possible responses, including mortality or changes in behavior or reproduction Application: To assess the risk a chemical poses to any organism by determining the concentrations that cause harm.

  7. Doubling Time The number of years it takes a population to double Application: Used to calculate future population size.

  8. E Horizon The zone of leaching that forms under the O horizon or, less often, the A horizon. Application: One of the layers in soil in which iron, aluminum, and dissolved organic acids are transported through and removed then deposited in the B horizon.

  9. Earthquake The sudden movement of Earth’s crust caused by a release of potential energy along a geologic fault and usually causing a vibration or trembling at Earth’s surface Application: Part of a cycle of surfacing and sinking of magma from the mantle.

  10. Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever An infectious disease with high death rates, caused by the Ebola Virus Application: An emergent viral disease that kills a large percentage of those infected. It has no cure and an origin has not been found.
