  1. Disease • What is a disease and how doe we get them?

  2. Disease • Disease is any condition that prevents the body from working as it should. • Examples???

  3. Causes of Disease • Pathogens- foreign invader organisms • How can you get one? • Water • Air • Food

  4. Causes of Disease

  5. Causes of Disease

  6. Causes of Diseases • Cancer- uncontrolled cell division due to genetic mutation • Uncontrolled dell division can result in a tumor forming

  7. Causes of Diseases • Cancer-Genetic Mutations of cells cause cancer • Exposure to certain chemicals • Radiation exposure • increase mutations and chance of cancer

  8. The Immune System • How do we protect ourselves from disease?

  9. Immune System: Pre-defence • Senses • Hormone Release • Muscles fight and run • Skin Barrier • Body Fluids, tears, saliva • Nervous System

  10. Immune System: Antigens • Antigens- a molecule recognized by the immune system- if the body does not recognize the antigen it responds

  11. White Blood Cells and Antibodies • White blood cells- the Maverick cells…taking the fight to the pathogens

  12. White Blood Cells • Some surround and engulf pathogens • Some produce antibodies (proteins that either kill invaders or mark them for killing) • Marked Cells are later killed by other white blood cells • Antibodies are effective against the same microorganisms years later (they remember)

  13. Antibodies- (proteins that either kill invaders or mark them for killing)

  14. Vaccinations • What do we use a Vaccination for? • What is a vaccination

  15. Vaccinations • Weakened microbes (pathogens) are injected into body (Vaccination) • Antigens are on pathogens • Body produces antibodies and white blood cells attack and kill pathogens • Recipe for defense is stored by body to fight off future invaders!

  16. HW: Read Pages 33-37 and answer questions 54 to 69
